Lore

Biology

Boldore is a blue, rocky Pokémon with reddish-orange crystals across its back and chest, a spine between its yellow ears and pincer-like limbs tipped with more crystals. The crystals are its own energy, which leaks out endlessly and hardens. A healthy Boldore keeps its core sticking out. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 102 kg.

Behaviour

Boldore relies on sound to monitor its surroundings, so it always faces the same way, moving front to back and side to side and never diagonally. When it is angry it attacks without changing the direction it faces. It goes looking for underground water, but is uncomfortable around it and laps it up very carefully.

Habitat

The Pokédex puts it in caves. In Galar it appears on Route 8, in the Stony Wilderness, Giant's Mirror, Giant's Cap and the Lake of Outrage, and the expansion passes add raids and Dynamax Adventures. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

Powers

It shares Roggenrola's Abilities, Sturdy, Weak Armor and the hidden Sand Force. It learns Power Gem the moment it evolves, firing its crystal energy as a sparkling ray, and gains Rock Slide, Stone Edge and Explosion later. With 105 base Attack and 105 base Defense but only 20 base Speed, it is a heavy, slow hitter.

Name origin

Boldore may combine 'boulder', 'bold' (outstanding or large) and 'ore'. The Japanese name is Gantle (ガントル), possibly from gan (rock) and 'mantle'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia sees a geode and an earth elemental in Boldore, with crab-like pincers and the three-legged stance of a tripod. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Boldore evolves from Roggenrola and becomes Gigalith when traded.

In the games

Boldore turns up in caves: Chargestone Cave, Mistralton Cave and Twist Mountain in Black and White, its debut games, and Vast Poni Canyon in the Alola games.

In the anime

Ash's Roggenrola evolved into a Boldore in 'Battling the King of the Mines!' during his Gym battle against Clay. Goh caught a Boldore in the Wild Area in 'A Pinch of This, a Pinch of That!' after it intimidated Chloe's Eevee.
