Lore
Biology
Gigalith is a blue, four-legged Pokémon with spiny reddish-orange crystals on its back, chest, face and feet. Its body is made of extremely hard stone. When it fires with all its might, the force creates countless fissures across its body. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 260 kg.
Behaviour
Gigalith is hardy, and the Pokédex says its horsepower makes it a favourite partner of construction workers. Bulbapedia says that in Galar it works alongside Copperajah on building sites and in mines.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it usually lurks deep beneath the surface, and Bulbapedia places it in caves and tunnels. In Sword and Shield it appears in the Dusty Bowl as a wandering Pokémon and in Max Raid Battles, with more in the expansion passes. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its crystals soak up sunlight, which the core magnifies into a ball of light fired from its mouth, though the Sun Pokédex says it cannot fire at night or in rain. Its Abilities are Sturdy, Sand Stream, which whips up a sandstorm as it enters battle and replaces Weak Armor, and the hidden Sand Force. With 135 base Attack and 130 base Defense but 25 base Speed it is a slow wrecking ball.
Name origin
Gigalith may combine Greek gigas ('giant') and lithos ('stone'), with a nod to 'megalith' or 'monolith'. The Japanese name is Gigaiath (ギガイアス), possibly from gigas, Gaia (the Greek earth goddess) and Goliath.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia sees a crystal formation and an earth elemental in Gigalith. No designer is credited, so this is a fan reading.
Evolution notes
Gigalith is the final form of Roggenrola, evolving from Boldore when traded.
In the games
In Black 2 and White 2 a character on Route 7 will trade you a Gigalith for an Emolga. Otherwise it is a Boldore trade evolution, as it has been since its debut in Black and White.
In the anime
Gigalith debuted in 'Ash Versus the Champion!', rampaging through a town until the Champion Alder stopped it with his bare hands and found a nail stuck in its foot. In Pokémon Generations' 'The Uprising', Team Plasma Grunts use several against Iris and the Unova Gym Leaders.
