Brambleghast official artwork

Brambleghast is a Grass/Ghost-type Pokémon, the Tumbleweed Pokémon, number 947 (#0947) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 6 kg.

Brambleghast is the Tumbleweed Pokémon at its most dangerous: a larger, thornier mass of branches that wraps around prey and holds on until it has taken all the life energy it needs. The Pokédex warns that on rare occasions a mass outbreak of them can bury an entire town.

Lore

Biology

Brambleghast is 1.2 m tall and 6 kg, a loose sphere of brownish-yellow branches with light purple tips and a dark brown base. A central front branch and two smaller branches beside it form a face, and the smaller ones act as lips that can grin or frown. Its diamond-shaped, leaf-like eyes flip and rotate to show its feelings.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says it folds the branches of its head around prey and holds on until it has taken all the life energy it wants, then spits the prey out. Away from hunting it wanders arid regions, rolled along by the wind.

Habitat

Arid regions, according to the Pokédex, and Bulbapedia mentions deserts. In Scarlet and Violet it is found on Paldea's North Province Area One and Socarrat Trail, and Serebii lists forest and mountain biomes.

Powers

Its Abilities match Bramblin's: Wind Rider, with Infiltrator hidden. It hits harder, with 115 base Attack, using Power Whip, Phantom Force, Hex, Giga Drain and Pain Split. With 90 base Speed it is a quick physical attacker.

Name origin

Brambleghast may blend 'bramble' with 'ghastly', 'ghast' (an undead creature in fantasy fiction) or 'aghast'. The Japanese name is Anohoragusa (アノホラグサ), which may come from ano hora kusa ('Um... look! Grass') and 'horror'.

Design inspiration

Like Bramblin, it appears to be a tumbleweed, and Bulbapedia notes that some tumbleweed species cause real outbreaks, which fits the Pokédex warning. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Brambleghast comes from Bramblin through the walking-steps method and does not evolve further.

In the games

Brambleghast is a wild Pokémon and a 5-star Tera Raid Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Shine's Brambleghast debuted in Pokémon Horizons in 'The Wild Pair, Friede and Cap!', where it evolved from Bramblin to break free from imprisonment by Pokémon hunters.

Fun facts

  • Its two eyes mirror each other: Bulbapedia says the right one has a thin red pupil on black, while the left reverses the colours.
  • Bulbapedia says each eye is circled by a tiny tumbleweed of its own, made of three stalks.
  • Bulbapedia says the way it envelops and then releases prey may be inspired by jellyfish and other cnidarians.
