Lore

Biology

Brionne is 0.6 m tall and 17.5 kg, light blue, with three ruffles of alternating white and pale blue around its body. Its long ears are made of three segments, an oval followed by two spheres that grow larger towards the tip. As it dances it makes water balloons in many colours.

Behaviour

Brionne is a skilful, caring dancer. The Pokédex says it performs a cheerful dance when its Trainer is feeling down, and it gets excited by routines it does not know yet, practising until it has them. On calm nights a whole group of Brionne will dance together in the moonlight, led by a Primarina's singing.

Habitat

No Pokédex entry names a natural habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is only available in The Indigo Disk, by evolving Popplio, or by trade or HOME.

Powers

Dancing is Brionne's offence. It confuses opponents with its moves, then slaps its balloons at them, where they burst; Water Gun, Bubble Beam and Aqua Jet fit the style, while Sing and Baby-Doll Eyes soften rivals up. Torrent strengthens Water moves at low HP, and hidden Liquid Voice makes sound moves like Hyper Voice Water-type. Base Special Attack 91 and Special Defense 81 make it a decent special attacker for a middle form.

Name origin

Brionne may combine brio (liveliness in performance), 'sea lion', 'brine', sissonne (a ballet step) and ondine (a water nymph). The Japanese name is Osyamari (オシャマリ), possibly from oshare ('fashionable') or oshama ('precocious girl'), mari ('ball') and 'marine'.

Design inspiration

Brionne appears to blend a sea lion with performers such as Japanese idols, ballerinas and circus clowns, nodding to trained sea lion shows. It may also borrow from the Hawaiian monk seal.

Evolution notes

Brionne evolves from Popplio at level 17 and into Primarina at level 34.

In the games

Brionne is the middle stage of Alola's Water starter and has no starring role of its own; it first appeared in Sun and Moon. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Ida's Brionne debuted in 'Balloons, Brionne, and Belligerence!' as part of her street performances, and later evolved into a Primarina. Lana's Popplio evolved into a Brionne in 'Evolving Research!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Brionne hides its sorrow and acts cheerful, so only people it trusts ever see it sad.
  • Brionne usually learns its dances from members of its colony, but Bulbapedia says it can learn them from humans too.
  • Although it is a pure Water type, Brionne knows the Fairy-type move Disarming Voice from level 1.
