Lore
Biology
Primarina is 1.8 m tall and weighs 44 kg. Its body is mostly white, ending in a long blue fish tail, and it wears a tiara of pearls and pink sea stars with long blue hair tied in a ponytail by strings of pearls. Its front fins are long, and Bulbapedia says it can use its white tail fins as feet to stand. In the games and anime its ponytail briefly comes loose during some moves.
Behaviour
Primarina treats every battle as a stage. The Pokédex says it leads its colony in song on moonlit nights, and the melody it sings is picked up from other Primarina and handed down the generations. Bulbapedia adds that its balloons glitter in the moonlight, but some are explosive and go off at a touch, while the harmless ones serve as platforms to tease opponents.
Habitat
No Pokédex entry names a natural habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is only available in The Indigo Disk, by evolving Brionne, or by trade or HOME.
Powers
Its signature move is Sparkling Aria, a Water move that Primarina alone learns by levelling up, and only Primarina can use the Z-Move Oceanic Operetta. It also sings and blasts with Hyper Voice and Moonblast and calls on Hydro Pump and Misty Terrain. Torrent strengthens Water moves at low HP, and hidden Liquid Voice makes its sound moves Water-type. With base Special Attack 126 and HP 80 it is a powerful special attacker.
Name origin
Primarina may combine 'prima donna', 'marina' and 'ballerina'. The Japanese name is Ashirene (アシレーヌ), possibly from ashika ('sea lion') and either sirène (French for 'mermaid' or 'siren') or 'serene'.
Design inspiration
Primarina is modelled on a sea lion, most of all the Japanese sea lion, and may also borrow from the Hawaiian monk seal and from mermaids. Its performing could reflect sea lion shows at circuses and zoos, its singing the sirens of myth, and its look ballerinas, opera singers and the Pierrot clown; selkies are another possible source. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Primarina evolves from Brionne at level 34 and is the final form of Popplio.
In the games
Primarina, the final form of Alola's Water starter since Sun and Moon, is currently the only evolved first partner Pokémon with the Fairy type, according to Bulbapedia. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Lana's Brionne evolved into Primarina in 'The One That Didn't Get Away!' while chasing a Kyogre that had Lana's fishing line stuck in its mouth. Ida's Primarina is her main Pokémon in 'Evolving Research!'.
