Lore

Biology

Pikipek is 0.3 m tall and weighs 1.2 kg. It has black plumage, a long grey beak with a black tip, big blue eyes and a white mask-like marking that runs down its neck to a tuft on its chest. A crest with a red stripe sweeps upward from behind its head. Bulbapedia says it feels no pain when it uses its neck muscles, which is how it can drill through wood and shatter stone.

Behaviour

Pikipek uses the holes it drills for nests and food stores, and Bulbapedia adds that it also collects small glittering objects in them. The noise of its pecking is also how it talks to other Pokémon.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it usually lives in damp forests. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the Coastal Biome and Torchlit Labyrinth of The Indigo Disk, and in 1-star Tera Raid Battles at Blueberry Academy.

Diet

It feeds on Berries, and the Pokédex says it fires the leftover seeds from its mouth as ammunition.

Powers

Peck, Rock Smash and Drill Peck are its tools, with Echoed Voice, Supersonic and Screech for noise and Bullet Seed for its Berry seeds. Its Ability Skill Link makes multi-hit moves such as Fury Attack and Bullet Seed hit their full number of times, Keen Eye prevents its accuracy from dropping, and Pickup is hidden. Base Attack 75 is its one real strength.

Name origin

Pikipek may combine picus (Latin for 'woodpecker'), 'pick' and 'peck'. The Japanese name is Tsutsukera (ツツケラ), possibly from tsutsuki ('pecking') and keratsutsuki ('woodpecker').

Design inspiration

Pikipek looks modelled on a pileated woodpecker. Since its line ends in toucan-like forms, it may also borrow from a young toco toucan.

Evolution notes

Pikipek evolves into Trumbeak at level 14, which evolves into Toucannon at level 28.

In the games

Pikipek is one of the early birds of Alola, found in Sun and Moon and their Ultra versions on Routes 1, 4, 5 and 6 and in the Poké Pelago. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

A flock of wild Pikipek debuted in 'First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-Style!', raised by a Trumbeak and a Toucannon and searching for food on Melemele Island.

Fun facts

  • Pikipek was the first Generation VII species other than Magearna to be shown officially, as an unnamed wireframe model in the February 2016 Pokémon Direct.
  • Bulbapedia says Talonflame hunts Pikipek in the wild, and Pikipek in turn feeds on Metapod.
  • In the anime episode 'Dewpider Ascending!', a Pikipek kept pecking a wild Dewpider with Peck until it popped the bubble helmet.
