Lore
Biology
Trumbeak is 0.6 m tall and 14.8 kg, a black-feathered bird with a long beak that runs from orange through light red to a black tip. It has a short crest, a white face and chest, a jagged red band round its neck and spindly blue legs with two toes pointing forward and two back. Bending the beak changes the sound it makes.
Behaviour
Trumbeak lives noisily in areas dense with trees, and its loud cries are not popular with the neighbours. The Pokédex says the seeds it scatters in battle later grow into new plants.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says it lives in areas dense with trees. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the Coastal Biome and Torchlit Labyrinth of The Indigo Disk, and in 3-star Tera Raid Battles at Blueberry Academy.
Diet
It eats Berries and keeps their seeds in its beak.
Powers
Trumbeak fires the stored seeds in a burst at enemies and prey, which in game terms means Bullet Seed at level 37. It also uses Drill Peck, Fury Attack and Rock Blast, and its cries become Supersonic, Screech and Hyper Voice. Skill Link and Keen Eye are its regular Abilities, with Pickup hidden. Base Attack 85 and Speed 75 make it a quick, hard-pecking middle form.
Name origin
Trumbeak may combine 'trumpet' and 'beak'. The Japanese name is Kerarappa (ケララッパ), possibly from keratsutsuki ('woodpecker') and rappa ('trumpet').
Design inspiration
Trumbeak looks modelled on a woodpecker, probably a pileated or ivory-billed one, with some resemblance to honeyguides or an immature toco toucan. It also appears to be tied to brass instruments: its name, its category and its bendable beak, which changes its call much as a trombone's slide changes length. The bending may also reference rhynchokinesis, the way some birds can flex their upper beak. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Trumbeak evolves from Pikipek at level 14 and into Toucannon at level 28.
In the games
Trumbeak is a mid-game bird of Alola, found in Sun and Moon on Routes 5, 8 and 11, in Lush Jungle and around the Poni area. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Trumbeak debuted in 'First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-Style!' as one of the leaders of the wild Pikipek flock.
