Lore

Biology

Toucannon is 1.1 m tall and weighs 26 kg, a black bird with a huge beak banded in red, orange and yellow. Gas inside the beak ignites to launch seeds.

Behaviour

Toucannon strike beaks with one another to communicate, and the Pokédex says the strength and number of hits show how they feel. They are known for forming loving couples, and people bring a Toucannon along to weddings as a lucky charm.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat for Toucannon. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the Coastal Biome and Torchlit Labyrinth of The Indigo Disk.

Powers

Its signature move is Beak Blast, and Toucannon is the only Pokémon that can learn it. It also fires Bullet Seed and Rock Blast and strikes with Drill Peck and Hyper Voice. Keen Eye keeps its accuracy from being lowered, Skill Link makes multi-hit moves land every hit, and hidden Sheer Force boosts moves with extra effects but removes those effects. Base Attack 120 and HP 80 make it a strong physical attacker.

Name origin

Toucannon may combine 'toucan' and 'cannon'. The Japanese name is Dodekabashi (ドデカバシ), possibly from dodekai ('huge') and ōhashi ('toucan').

Design inspiration

Toucannon looks modelled on a toco toucan, and firing seeds from a heated beak is like a cannon, which needs a lot of heat to launch its shot. Real toucans do lose excess body heat through their bills. Its line may also reference bird classification: woodpeckers and toucans both belong to the order Piciformes. Its Shiny beak appears to echo thermal images of toucans. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Toucannon evolves from Trumbeak at level 28 and is the last stage of the Pikipek line.

In the games

Toucannon first appears in Sun and Moon, where you get one by evolving Trumbeak. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon it can also be found in SOS Battles on Route 11 and around Poni Grove and Poni Plains. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

A wild Toucannon was one of the leaders of the Pikipek flock in 'First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-Style!' and gave Rowlet permission to join Ash's team. Kahili's Toucannon, Touckey, appears in 'Keeping Your Eyes on the Ball!' as her partner since childhood and golfing helper.

  • In the anime, a Toucannon warms eggs with its heated beak.
  • Bulbapedia says its tail looks bent for standing on briefly, possibly to brace it when firing seeds.
