Lore
Biology
Yungoos is a long-bodied brown mongoose, 0.4 m tall and 6 kg, with a yellow stripe running along its back and belly, a wide flat tail and three black claws on each short leg. Most of its length is stomach, and it digests food quickly. Its sharp, strong teeth can crush the hardest of objects, and the Pokédex says it will bite anything.
Behaviour
Yungoos is always hungry, which makes it fiercer, and it stalks its territory until it passes out. Bulbapedia says it is believed to choose its territory for safety, so that it can drop from exhaustion anywhere. The Pokédex adds that the cost of feeding it is no laughing matter for Trainers.
Habitat
The Pokédex has it marching down the streets in search of prey. In Scarlet and Violet it is found across Paldea's South, East and West Provinces, the Asado Desert and Inlet Grotto.
Diet
It will eat anything but prefers fresh prey.
Powers
Yungoos bites with Bite and Crunch, throws a Thrash and uses Super Fang. Its Ability Stakeout doubles its move power against a Pokémon that has just switched in, Strong Jaw strengthens biting moves, and Adaptability is hidden. Its stat line is small, with base Attack 70 the only number worth noting.
Name origin
Yungoos may combine 'young' or yankī (a Japanese word for a juvenile delinquent style) with 'mongoose'. The Japanese name is Youngoose (ヤングース).
Design inspiration
Yungoos looks modelled on a mongoose like the small Indian mongoose, which was brought to Hawaii to control rats on sugar cane plantations. The plan failed because the mongoose is active by day and rats at night, and it became an invasive species instead.
Evolution notes
Yungoos evolves into Gumshoos at level 20, but only when it levels up during the day.
In the games
Yungoos is a common early encounter in Alola, and in Sun, Moon and their Ultra versions Team Skull steals a child's Yungoos at the Aether House after Acerola's trial. In Scarlet and Violet it is a regular wild Pokémon in Paldea, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Zipp's Yungoos debuted in 'Alola to New Adventure!', and an ally Yungoos fought beside Totem Gumshoos in 'To Top a Totem!'.
