Centiskorch official artwork

Centiskorch is a Fire/Bug-type Pokémon, the Radiator Pokémon, number 851 (#0851) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 3 m tall and weighs 120 kg.

Centiskorch, the Radiator Pokémon, is a Fire and Bug centipede that ferments food into flammable gas and burns it through glowing organs along its belly, turning its whole body into a whip of flame. The Pokédex says it is excessively hostile, with large, very sharp fangs.

Lore

Biology

Centiskorch is a flat red centipede that measures 3 m and weighs 120 kg. Round orange-yellow heat organs sit under every body segment, and flames stream from its head and tail like antennae and a sting. Bulbapedia says the gas it burns comes from food fermenting inside its body. The Pokédex puts its body temperature at about 800 °C (1,500 °F).

Behaviour

Once it is fully heated, Centiskorch cracks its body like a whip and hurls itself at its enemies. Its flaming body is a hazard on its own, so a temper this bad makes it doubly dangerous.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Sword and Shield it appears in Max Raid Battles around the Wild Area, such as Stony Wilderness and Dusty Bowl, and the Expansion Pass adds Giant's Foot and Max Lair.

Powers

Its Abilities are Flash Fire and White Smoke, with Flame Body hidden. It learns Flame Wheel, Bug Bite, Crunch, Fire Lash, Lunge and Burn Up. Gigantamax Centiskorch sprouts extra segments, and the Pokédex says its heat passes 1,000 °C (1,800 °F), incinerating enemies and sometimes destabilising air currents enough to cause storms. With 115 base Attack and 100 base HP it is a sturdy Fire attacker, though 65 Speed is only middling.

Name origin

Centiskorch likely blends 'centipede' and 'scorch', and may nod to 'centigrade'. The Japanese name is Maruyakude (マルヤクデ), possibly from maruyake ('completely burned'), a word for millipede or centipede, and Yakude, Sizzlipede's Japanese name.

Design inspiration

James Turner is credited with Centiskorch, Sizzlipede and the Gigantamax form. It appears to be a centipede, possibly the bioluminescent fire centipede Orphnaeus brevilabiatus, and its glowing belly segments resemble cooktops or radiators. It may also draw on the Ōmukade, a giant centipede from Japanese myth whose bright orange legs looked like thousands of torches. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Sizzlipede evolves into Centiskorch at level 28.

In the games

Kabu, the Fire-type Gym Leader of Motostoke, ends his Gym battle with a Gigantamax Centiskorch in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A, so it stays a Galar Pokémon.

In the anime

Centiskorch appeared in 'Sword and Shield, Slumbering Weald!', where Doug's Centiskorch Gigantamaxed after being hit by stray Dynamax energy and was stopped by Leon's Charizard. In Horizons, Kabu's Centiskorch teams up with Wakaba's Rolycoly against Liko and Roy in 'Kabu's Battle Training!'.

Fun facts

  • Gigantamax Centiskorch is 75 m tall, the tallest Gigantamax form, which Bulbapedia says makes it the tallest obtainable Pokémon.
  • Its Gigantamax artwork shows 100 legs, which Bulbapedia says is more than any other Pokémon.
  • Bulbapedia says Scolipede is its natural predator or prey, depending on who wins their territorial fights, and notes that Venipede's and Scolipede's Pokédex entries mention the feud even though the two families live in different parts of Galar.
  • Bulbapedia's party table for Kabu's Gym battle lists his Gigantamax Centiskorch at level 27, one level below the 28 at which Sizzlipede normally evolves.
