Lore

Biology

Cinderace is a white, rabbit-like footballer, 1.4 m tall and 33 kg, with navy fur forming a sporty vest, belt and boots, red-orange fur like a pair of shorts and a flame-like tuft on its forehead. Three yellow dots of fur on each sole are where its flames come out. The Pokédex says it is skilled at both offence and defence, and Bulbapedia describes powerful kicks from any position thanks to its strong core and balance.

Behaviour

Cinderace loses its cool easily, but the Pokédex says it will fight without a slip for a Trainer it trusts. Bulbapedia says it uses feints and artful footwork to throw opponents off, and the Pokédex adds that the fireball it makes blinds opponents and keeps them at bay.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it needs a trade in the base game, or can be evolved from Raboot in The Indigo Disk.

Powers

Pyro Ball, which launches a lit pebble and may burn the target, and Court Change are moves only Cinderace can learn. Its Ability is Blaze, and its hidden Libero changes its type to match its last move; Bulbapedia says only this line can have it. Gigantamax Cinderace rides a fireball that Bulbapedia says can pass 90 m (300 ft) and chase its targets, and only it can use G-Max Fireball. With base Speed 119 and Attack 116 it is a fast physical attacker.

Name origin

Cinderace may combine 'cinder' and 'ace'. The Japanese name is Aceburn (エースバーン), which may blend 'ace', 'burn' and 'bunny'.

Design inspiration

Cinderace appears to be a rabbit or hare crossed with an association-football player. Its Libero Ability may refer to the versatile libero position in football, and Bulbapedia suggests its place as a Galar starter may nod to association football having started in England. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Cinderace evolves from Raboot at level 35 and is the last stage of the Scorbunny line.

In the games

Cinderace is the final stage of the Galar Fire starter in Sword and Shield, with Gigantamax Cinderace arriving in The Isle of Armor. It is also playable in Pokémon UNITE as a ranged attacker. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Goh's Cinderace debuted in 'Sword and Shield... The Legends Awaken!', evolving from Raboot while battling Oleana's Milotic. Leon's Cinderace faces Ash in the Masters Eight Tournament in 'A Flood of Torrential Gains!', and is revealed to be able to Gigantamax in 'Partners in Time!'.

Fun facts

  • In 'A Flood of Torrential Gains!', the red tuft on Cinderace's head changes colour whenever Libero changes its type.
  • Bulbapedia reports that Gigantamax Cinderace has legs said to be the strongest of any Pokémon, strong enough to overwhelm even a Dynamax Pokémon with kicks alone.
  • In Pokémon UNITE, Cinderace begins each match as Scorbunny, turns into Raboot at level 5 and reaches its final form at level 7.
