Lore
Biology
Scorbunny is a small white rabbit, 0.3 m tall and 4.5 kg. Its ears, toes and neck carry orange and yellow marks, and it has buckteeth and a yellow band across its orange nose. A sac in its chest stores fire energy, which flows to special pads on its feet and nose. The Pokédex says these pads radiate tremendous heat once it is ready to fight, and Bulbapedia notes they can start small fires and, in the anime, thaw others out of ice.
Behaviour
Scorbunny loves to run and is full of energy, and the Pokédex says that is why it does warm-up exercises. Bulbapedia says it uses its strong legs to leap around opponents and confuse them, and that it is rarely seen without a Trainer. In the anime's Pokédex, the soles of its feet are said to bring good luck.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat, though Bulbapedia says it has been seen in the Terarium at Blueberry Academy. In Scarlet and Violet it needs a trade in the base game, and appears wild in the Terarium's Polar Biome in The Indigo Disk.
Powers
Blaze strengthens its Fire moves when its health is low, and its hidden Ability is Libero. It fights with Ember, Quick Attack, Double Kick and Flame Charge, and learns Bounce later. With base Speed 69 and Attack 71 it is a quick physical attacker.
Name origin
Scorbunny may combine 'scorch', 'score' and 'bunny'. The Japanese name is Hibanny (ヒバニー), which may blend 火 hi ('fire'), 火花 hibana ('spark') and 'bunny'.
Design inspiration
Scorbunny looks like a white rabbit. Rabbits have a high body temperature, and a Buddhist Jataka tale has a rabbit leaping into a fire as an offering without being burnt, either of which could explain its Fire type. The good luck in its soles likely echoes the rabbit's-foot charm. Bulbapedia says the yellow mark over its nose is inspired by a Japanese design trope where a bandage on the nose signals a rambunctious character. Some of these are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Scorbunny evolves into Raboot at level 16, and Raboot into Cinderace at level 35.
In the games
Scorbunny was one of the three Galar starters in Sword and Shield, given out by Leon in Postwick. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Goh's Scorbunny debuted in 'Settling the Scorbunny!', found in Wyndon among a pack of Nickit. After a battle with Ash it took a liking to Goh and followed him until he caught it in 'Mind-Boggling Dynamax!'.
