Lore

Biology

Combusken walks on two legs and resembles a chicken, 0.9 m tall and 19.5 kg. Its upper body is yellow and its lower body orange, with a three-pointed feather crest that is smaller on females. It has orange eyes, a short wide beak, three sharp claws on each long arm, and scaly grey legs with shaggy feathers on the thighs.

Behaviour

Combusken toughens its legs by running through fields and mountains, which the Pokédex says gives them speed and power in equal measure. In battle it lets out sharp cries that intimidate foes, and the flame inside it grows stronger as the fight goes on.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists grasslands, which fits its running habits. In Scarlet and Violet it comes from evolving a Torchic in The Indigo Disk.

Powers

Blaze boosts its Fire moves when its HP is low, and Speed Boost is hidden. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Slash and Bounce, then Blaze Kick at level 40, Reversal at 50 and Flare Blitz at 55, and Close Combat is available by TM. With base Attack and Special Attack both 85, it can hit hard either way.

Name origin

Combusken may combine 'combustion' and 'chicken', and could also involve 'combat' and 'comb'. The Japanese name is Wakasyamo (ワカシャモ), which may mix 若い wakai (young) and 軍鶏 shamo, the fighting-chicken breed.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Combusken may be based on a fighting chicken. This is a fan reading, not an official statement.

Evolution notes

Combusken evolves from Torchic at level 16 and into Blaziken at level 36.

In the games

The middle stage of the Torchic line, Combusken first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire. It turned up in Sword and Shield's Max Lair through the Expansion Pass, and in the Mega Dimension DLC of Legends: Z-A it is found in Hyperspace Lumiose's Fire-type and Fighting-type wild zones.

In the anime

May's Torchic became a Combusken in 'A Shroomish Skirmish'. In 'Having a Wailord of a Time', a Torchic being minded by a Nurse Joy evolved into one by gaining too much experience, had to be hidden, and was allowed to stay as a guard after it saved a Wailord.

Fun facts

  • In Pokémon Sleep, Combusken's loud, distracting cry becomes much quieter while it sleeps, which Bulbapedia says makes that the best time to observe it.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Sapphire's Torchic evolves into Combusken before her Gym battle with Brawly and beats his Hariyama.
  • Team Galactic Grunts in the Pokémon Adventures manga use several Combusken, a Hoenn Pokémon on a Sinnoh team.
