Torchic

Torchic is a Fire-type Pokémon, the Chick Pokémon, number 255 (#0255) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the Hoenn region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 2.5 kg.
Torchic is the Chick Pokémon, a fluffy Fire-type starter with a flame sac in its belly that makes it as warm to hug as a hot-water bottle. The Pokédex also says it can fire fireballs that leave foes scorched black.

Lore
Biology
Torchic is a small chick, 0.4 m tall and 2.5 kg, wrapped in orange feathers over a fluffy layer of down, with stubby yellow wings and a flame-shaped crest. Its legs and short beak are light brownish yellow. Inside its belly sits a flame sac, and the Pokédex says the fire burns for as long as Torchic lives. It shoots fireballs that the Pokédex puts at 1,000 °C (1,800 °F).
Behaviour
Torchic tags along behind its Trainer on wobbly legs. It dislikes the dark because it cannot see its surroundings. Bulbapedia, citing Pokémon Sleep, says the warmth of its downy body makes it a comfortable thing to sleep beside.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists grasslands, though Bulbapedia says Torchic is rarely seen in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in the Polar Biome added by The Indigo Disk.
Powers
Its Ability Blaze boosts Fire moves by half when its HP is low, and the hidden Ability Speed Boost raises its Speed every turn, which suits a Pokémon with a base Speed of only 45. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Ember and Flame Charge early, then Flamethrower at level 30 and Flare Blitz at level 39. Base Special Attack 70 and Attack 60 make it a fairly balanced attacker.
Name origin
Torchic joins 'torch' and 'chick'. The Japanese name is Achamo (アチャモ), which Bulbapedia says may mix 赤ちゃん akachan (baby) and 軍鶏 shamo, a Japanese breed of chicken once raised for fighting.
Design inspiration
Torchic is based on a newly hatched chick. Its bright orange colouring appears to come from painted chicks, which are dyed with paint and sold at festivals and fairs. Bulbapedia says it may also draw on the basan, a fire-breathing chicken from Japanese folklore. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Torchic evolves into Combusken at level 16, and Combusken into Blaziken at level 36.
In the games
Torchic is the Fire option among the three Hoenn partner Pokémon Professor Birch offers in Ruby and Sapphire, and it returns in Emerald and in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. It also decorates the introduction and menus of Pokémon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire. In the Mega Dimension DLC of Legends: Z-A it appears in the Fire-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
May's first partner was a Torchic she received in 'Get the Show on the Road!', the species' first anime appearance. Five Trainers' Torchic also attended the Wela Fire Festival in 'A Crowning Moment of Truth!'.

- Of all the Fire types in Generation III, Torchic is both the lightest and the shortest.
