Lore

Biology

Cosmoem is a see-through deep blue sphere patterned like a starry sky, set in a golden shell of a flat oval ringed by eight half-oval spikes. A small black core sits at its centre, with two orange semicircles that look like closed eyes. It is 0.1 m (0'04") tall and weighs 999.9 kg (2,204.4 lbs), though Bulbapedia notes that its Pokédex height is really its width, as the concept art shows.

Behaviour

Cosmoem cannot move: the Pokédex says it is motionless as if dead, though its body is faintly warm when touched. People think it may come from another world, and the people of ancient Alola named it the cocoon of the stars.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. It cannot be caught wild in Sun and Moon, where you obtain it by evolving Cosmog; in Scarlet and Violet it needs a transfer from Pokémon HOME or an event, and it is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

The Pokédex says the absorption of starlight fuels its growth.

Powers

Its Ability is Sturdy, and its moves are Cosmic Power, which raises its Defense and Special Defense, and Teleport. Base Defense and Special Defense are both 131, but its Attack and Special Attack are only 29, so it is all defence and no offence.

Name origin

Cosmoem may blend cosmos, embryo and ovum, the Latin word for egg. The Japanese name is Cosmovum (コスモウム), which may blend cosmos and ovum.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says it has features of both a stylised sun, with rays, and a stylised moon, with a pair of crescents, and that its huge weight for its size recalls compressed objects like neutron stars. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Cosmoem evolves into Solgaleo at level 53 in Sun, Ultra Sun, Sword and Scarlet, and into Lunala at level 53 in Moon, Ultra Moon, Shield and Violet. Bulbapedia says it glows orange or purple as it does.

In the games

Cosmoem is a stage in the story of Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, where Lillie carries one in her bag. In Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra you evolve one yourself.

In the anime

Ash's Nebby evolved into Cosmoem in 'Faba's Revenge!', after being trapped in a device built by Faba, and became a Solgaleo in 'Revealing the Stuff of Legend!'.

Fun facts

  • No evolution adds more weight than Cosmog to Cosmoem, a gain of 999,800 percent.
  • Bulbapedia counts only three moves for Cosmoem, the fewest learnable moves of any evolved Pokémon.
  • Bulbapedia says it is the only Pokémon that evolves at level 53.
  • Bulbapedia calls it the shortest of all Legendary Pokémon.
