Lore
Biology
Cramorant is a blue seabird, 0.8 m tall and 18 kg, with big round green eyes, a long thin yellow beak, a grey bib of ruffled feathers and wings held permanently out to its sides. The Pokédex says it instinctively swallows everything whole, and that it is at its most formidable when struggling with a mouthful too big for it.
Behaviour
The Violet Pokédex calls Cramorant an "incredibly poor learner" that spends as little energy on thinking as it can, and the Sword entry says it may forget mid-battle what it is fighting. The Scarlet entry adds that even with a Pikachu wedged in its throat, it does nothing to let go.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it hunts for food along riverbanks; Serebii lists rocky, grass, river and lake biomes in Kitakami. Scarlet and Violet have no wild ones in Paldea: Scarlet has them in Kitakami (The Teal Mask), while Violet players use Tera Raid searches or a trade. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Diet
Arrokuda, which it swallows whole without a thought, according to the Pokédex.
Powers
Its only Ability is Gulp Missile, which no other Pokémon has. Using Surf or Dive with more than half its HP left brings Cramorant up in Gulping Form, an Arrokuda lodged in its beak; at half HP or less it surfaces in Gorging Form with a Pikachu. When a damaging move hits it, it spits the catch at the attacker for damage equal to a quarter of their maximum HP, then lowers their Defense (Arrokuda) or paralyses them (Pikachu). Its best base stat is Special Defense at 95.
Name origin
Cramorant may combine 'cram' and 'cormorant', the diving seabird. The Japanese name Uu (ウッウ) may combine a choking sound with u (鵜, 'cormorant'), and it is a palindrome.
Design inspiration
Cramorant may be based on two seabirds common around the British Isles, which inspired Galar: the cormorant and the fulmar, which vomits in defence to turn predators away. These are fan readings.
In the games
Cramorant lives on Route 9 and in Bridge Field in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles in Kitakami.
In the anime
Cramorant appeared in every form in the film 'Secrets of the Jungle'. In 'Just a Scone's Throw From Here!', James wins one from the Rocket Prize Master, and it uses an Arrokuda against Goh's Pokémon.
Fun facts
- The Arrokuda and Pikachu in its beak are never Shiny, Bulbapedia notes.
- Gulping Form and Gorging Form have no change animation: Cramorant simply appears carrying its catch once the move animation ends.
- Bulbapedia suggests its orange Shiny colour may be inspired by UK news stories of seagulls that turned orange after falling into curry sauce.
