Arrokuda official artwork

Arrokuda is a Water-type Pokémon, the Rush Pokémon, number 846 (#0846) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 1 kg.

Arrokuda is the Rush Pokémon, a barracuda-like Water type that swims fast only in a straight line and charges at anything that moves, jaw first. It is very proud of that pointed jaw, but its eyesight is so poor that it misses a lot.

How to pronounce Arrokuda

Arrokuda is pronounced air-oh-KOO-duh. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Arrokuda is a fish with a brown and tan body, 0.5 m long and 1.0 kg, with two big black eyes, two small upward-pointing teeth and two red spots behind its jaw. Six white scales mark its sides, and three fins on its tail look like a ship's propeller.

Behaviour

Arrokuda charges at any movement it sees, jaw first, but its poor eyesight means the Pokédex rates the tactic as having a low success rate. Overfed Arrokuda become sluggish, and Cramorant swallows them up; in Paldea flocks of Wattrel target them first.

Habitat

Rivers, lakes and the sea: Serebii lists ocean and river biomes in Paldea and river, lake and cave water in Kitakami. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the Paldean seas and rivers and in Kitakami's Crystal Pool and Chilling Waterhead. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Arrokuda's Abilities are Swift Swim, which doubles its Speed in rain, and the hidden Propeller Tail, which ignores moves and Abilities that draw attacks in; Bulbapedia says only Arrokuda and Barraskewda can have Propeller Tail. It opens with Peck and Aqua Jet, bites with Bite and Crunch, and later learns Liquidation. Base Attack 63 and Speed 66 are modest, but they are its best stats.

Name origin

Arrokuda may combine 'arrow' and 'barracuda'. The Japanese name Sasikamasu (サシカマス) may combine sashi ('pricking') and kamasu ('barracuda').

Design inspiration

Arrokuda seems to be based on the barracuda and on pike such as the northern pike, with arrows as another source, since its tail fin is shaped like fletching. Bulbapedia also notes that Arrokuda's and Barraskewda's colours and design resemble an Anglo-Saxon fish-shaped brooch. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Evolves into Barraskewda at level 26.

In the games

Nessa, the Hulbury Gym Leader, uses a level 23 Arrokuda in her Gym battle in Sword and Shield, where it debuted, and wild ones swim around Route 2 and Hulbury. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 2-star Tera Raid Battles.

In the anime

Arrokuda debuted in the film 'Secrets of the Jungle', eaten by a Cramorant. In the series, 'Just a Scone's Throw From Here!' has Jessie pull one from the Rocket Prize Master.

Fun facts
