Barraskewda is the Skewer Pokémon, a Water type that spins its tail fins like a propeller and shoots through the sea at over 100 knots (185 km/h), spearing its prey on a jaw as sharp as a spear. The Pokédex adds that its flesh is surprisingly tasty.

Lore

Biology

Barraskewda is a long, tapered fish, 1.3 m long and 30 kg, with a brown head, small beady eyes and a pronounced underbite. Its tan body carries white bone-like markings and ends in four red tail fins that rotate like a propeller on a white hub. The Pokédex likens its jaw to a spear for sharpness and to steel for strength.

Behaviour

Barraskewda spins its tail fins to rocket forward, rams its prey and spears it. The Scarlet Pokédex says it leaps out of the water to bite Wingull flying close to the surface, and the Violet entry has it battling pods of Finizen for food.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; Serebii lists ocean and river biomes in Paldea and cave water in Kitakami. In Scarlet and Violet it swims in the Paldean seas and around Glaseado Mountain, and in The Teal Mask at Fellhorn Gorge. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

Wingull that fly low over the water, according to the Pokédex, and other prey it can ram and spear.

Powers

Barraskewda's Abilities are Swift Swim and the hidden Propeller Tail. It opens with Throat Chop, Aqua Jet and Bite and later learns Crunch and Liquidation. Base Attack 123 and a very high Speed make it a fast, hard-hitting attacker.

Name origin

Barraskewda may combine 'barracuda' and 'skewer'. The Japanese name Kamasujaw (カマスジョー) may combine kamasu ('barracuda') and 'jaw'.

Design inspiration

Like Arrokuda, Barraskewda seems to be based on the barracuda and on pike, with spears in the mix. Its propeller tail shares traits with torpedoes, and Bulbapedia wonders whether barracuda plus torpedo could refer to the Fairey Barracuda, a British bomber aircraft. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Arrokuda at level 26, and does not evolve further.

In the games

Gym Leader Nessa sends out a level 52 Barraskewda in a later battle in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. Wild ones swim around Route 2, Motostoke Riverbank and the Lake of Outrage, and in Scarlet and Violet it appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles.

In the anime

A Barraskewda lives in the lake where Nessa does a photo shoot in 'Early-Evening Waves', an episode of Pokémon: Twilight Wings.
