Lore

Biology

Dachsbun is a stout, long-bodied dog, 0.5 m tall and 14.9 kg, with fur in several shades of brown and a yellow underbelly. Its ears and the dewlap around its neck look like bread rolls, a braid-like row of bumps runs down its back, and its tail is round and flattened. Heat makes its skin harden, and its body gives off a pleasant, appetising aroma.

Behaviour

The Scarlet Pokédex says its aroma helps wheat to grow, so farming villages have treasured it. The Legends: Z-A Pokédex adds a darker side: the appetising scent can push opponents' hunger so high that they lose their willpower and tire out.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in a few spots in Paldea's South, East and West Provinces, and in 4-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Its Ability is Well-Baked Body, which makes it immune to Fire moves and sharply raises its Defense, with Aroma Veil hidden. It learns Play Rough, Crunch, Baton Pass and Double-Edge. Its base Defense of 115 is the highest of any Fairy type introduced in Generation IX, and base Speed 95 lets it act first against many foes.

Name origin

Dachsbun may combine 'dachshund' and 'bun'. The Japanese name is Bowtzel (バウッツェル), possibly from 'bow wow' and 'pretzel'.

Design inspiration

Dachsbun seems to be based on a dachshund and on baked goods such as loaves, rolls, brioche and pretzels. Bulbapedia notes that its darker colour than Fidough appears to reference the Maillard reaction, the chemistry that browns cooked food, which fits its Ability. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Dachsbun evolves from Fidough at level 26 and does not evolve further.

In the games

Ortega, boss of Team Star's Fairy crew, uses a level 51 Dachsbun in his first battle in Scarlet and Violet, the games that introduced it, and he is its sync pair partner in Pokémon Masters EX. In Legends: Z-A it appears wild in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose, in the 3-star Fairy-type wild zones.

In the anime

Dachsbun first appeared in Pokémon Horizons in a picture in 'Welcome to Naranja Academy!'. In 'Hamber's Moonlight Battle', a Trainer's Dachsbun fights an Arctibax while the Strong Sphere is affecting it.

Fun facts

  • In Pokémon Horizons, Dachsbun is the only Pokémon Ortega is known to own.
  • In the manga Pokémon Adventures, Ortega's Dachsbun uses Roar to swap out Violet's Crocalor, but is knocked out when Crocalor fires off Snarl at the same moment.
  • Dachsbun shares its Dog Pokémon category with only one other Pokémon, Boltund, according to Bulbapedia.
