Smoliv official artwork

Smoliv is a Grass/Normal-type Pokémon, the Olive Pokémon, number 928 (#0928) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 6.5 kg.

Smoliv is the Olive Pokémon, a pint-sized Grass and Normal type that turns nutrients into oil and keeps it in a fruit growing on its head. It can go a whole week without food or water, and its oil is bitter enough to make an attacker flinch.

Lore

Biology

Smoliv is 0.3 m tall and weighs 6.5 kg, a small, round, green body on two stubby legs. Its beady black eyes have white pupils, its mouth is jagged, and a few leaves ring a yellow fruit with a hole in the top. Bulbapedia says the oil it stores in that fruit is made from nutrients it gathers by photosynthesis.

Behaviour

The Scarlet Pokédex says Smoliv defends itself with oil from its head fruit, which is so bitter and puckering that it makes people flinch. Bulbapedia says it squirts the oil to slow an opponent and then runs away. It prefers dry, sunny climates and spends its time sunbathing.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found only in Area Two of Paldea's South Province, and it also appears in 1-star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Its Abilities are Early Bird and the hidden Harvest. It learns Razor Leaf at level 10, Mega Drain, Energy Ball and Leech Seed, plus Grassy Terrain at 23. Base Special Attack 58 is its best stat.

Name origin

Smoliv may combine 'small' or 'smol', a diminutive spelling, with 'olive'. The Japanese name is Minive (ミニーブ), probably 'mini' plus 'olive'.

Design inspiration

Smoliv looks like a green olive, while its Shiny colouring appears to follow a black olive. Bulbapedia notes that Spain, which inspired Paldea, is the world's biggest olive producer. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Smoliv evolves into Dolliv at level 25.

In the games

Brassius, the Artazon Gym Leader, uses a level 16 Smoliv in his Gym battle in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Two wild Smoliv debuted in the Pokémon Horizons episode 'Nemona and Brassius and…', and four more appear in 'Arboliva's Forest'.
