Olive Pokémon · Grass/Normal-type

Arboliva official artwork

Arboliva is a Grass/Normal-type Pokémon, the Olive Pokémon, number 930 (#0930) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 1.4 m tall and weighs 48.2 kg.

Arboliva is the Olive Pokémon, a Grass and Normal type that looks like a small olive tree and gladly shares its rich oil with weakened Pokémon. Make it feel threatened, though, and the same oil is fired hard enough to smash a boulder.

How to pronounce Arboliva

Arboliva is pronounced ar-boh-LEE-vuh. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Arboliva resembles a small olive tree, 1.4 m (4'07") tall and 48.2 kg (106.3 lbs), with a white upper body, a brown woody lower half and thin purple eyes that look closed. A leafy branch grows from each side of its upper body, each carrying three purplish olives, and it can bend them over its head like a wreath. It sleeps on its feet, head drooped and arms hanging limp.

Behaviour

Arboliva is calm and compassionate, and the Pokédex says it will share its oil with weakened Pokémon. When it is threatened it drives enemies back, the Pokédex claims, by launching that aromatic oil with enough force to shatter a boulder.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat, and neither does Bulbapedia. In Scarlet and Violet you can get one by evolving Dolliv.

Powers

Its Ability Seed Sower turns the ground into Grassy Terrain whenever it is hit, and Harvest is hidden. It can call up the terrain itself with Grassy Terrain, then follow with Terrain Pulse, whose type and power change with the terrain, plus Energy Ball and Petal Dance. Its base Special Attack of 125 is the highest of any Grass type introduced in Generation IX, and with Special Defense 109 it is a tough special attacker, though its Speed of 39 is low.

Name origin

Arboliva may blend arbor or árbol (tree), olive or oliva, and diva, from the Latin word for a goddess. The Japanese name is Oliva (オリーヴァ), which may combine olive and diva too.

Design inspiration

Arboliva appears to be based on an olive tree, possibly a nod to Spain, the country Paldea resembles and the world's biggest olive producer. The wreath pose it sometimes strikes in battle echoes an olive wreath, and its calm nature may play on the olive branch as a symbol of peace. It may also draw on dryads, the tree spirits of Greek myth. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Dolliv evolves into Arboliva at level 35, and Smoliv evolves into Dolliv at level 25.

In the games

Arboliva has no gym or story role, but it turns up as a 5-star Tera Raid Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Lucius, the Ancient Adventurer, had an Arboliva among the Six Heroes, his team of giant Pokémon. It debuted at the end of 'Nemona and Brassius and…' and entered Liko's care in 'The Future I Choose'.

Fun facts

  • Seed Sower has so far been found on Arboliva alone.
