Dewpider official artwork

Dewpider is a Water/Bug-type Pokémon, the Water Bubble Pokémon, number 751 (#0751) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the Alola region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 4 kg.

Dewpider is the Water Bubble Pokémon, a tiny spider that needs the oxygen in water to breathe, so it wears a bubble of water on its head whenever it walks on land. When two Dewpider meet they size up each other's bubbles, and the owner of the smaller one backs down.

Lore

Biology

Dewpider is a dark grey spider, 0.3 m tall and 4 kg, with a light green thorax, six thin legs and large light blue eyes. A water bubble sits over its head, held up by three of its legs. The Pokédex says it forms the bubble from sticky silk, so it rarely bursts, and that it sometimes secretly swaps which legs hold it. The bubble lets it breathe on land and shields its soft head.

Behaviour

When Dewpider meets an enemy or possible prey, the Pokédex says it smashes its bubble-covered head into it. In the anime a Dewpider challenges two others over territory, though it loses both contests.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it normally lives underwater and comes onto land to look for food. In Scarlet and Violet it is not wild in the base game but lives in The Indigo Disk's Coastal and Savanna biomes and Torchlit Labyrinth.

Powers

Its Ability is Water Bubble, which halves Fire damage against it, doubles the power of its own Water moves and prevents burns, with Water Absorb hidden. It fights with Bite, Bug Bite, Bubble Beam, Crunch and Liquidation, and can inherit Sticky Web through breeding. Special Defense of 72 is its best stat.

Name origin

Dewpider may blend 'dew' and 'spider', or may refer to dewdrop spiders. The Japanese name is Shizukumo (シズクモ), which may combine shizuku ('drop'), kumo ('spider') and mizugumo ('diving bell spider').

Design inspiration

Dewpider may take after the diving bell spider, a species that lives underwater and carries an air bubble to breathe from. Dewpider reverses this, carrying a bubble of water to breathe on land, and the bubble also makes it resemble a diving helmet.

Evolution notes

Dewpider evolves into Araquanid at level 22.

In the games

Dewpider is a resident of Brooklet Hill in Sun and Moon. It is found in Sword and Shield, including the Expansion Pass areas, and in Scarlet and Violet through The Indigo Disk, but it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Several Dewpider debuted in 'Dewpider Ascending!', where their parent Araquanid sends them off to find homes of their own. One falls for Lana after seeing her with a balloon stuck on her head because of Popplio.
