Lore
Biology
Drakloak is a lizard-like Pokémon, 1.4 m tall and 11 kg, with a wide black head, two upright horns and a pinkish-red triangle on each side of it. Its eyes are yellow under pink lids, and its light blue body includes the underside of its mouth; its yellow belly carries a red inverted V. It has stubby limbs and a long tail. The Pokédex says it flies at over 200 km/h (120 mph) and builds up energy in its lungs to fire in a blast.
Behaviour
Drakloak cares for its Dreepy and battles alongside it until it is grown up. The Pokédex says that if a Drakloak loses a fight, its Dreepy drifts away without a second thought.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Violet in Paldea's North Province, around Casseroya Lake and on Glaseado Mountain, and in 4 star Tera Raid Battles.
Powers
Drakloak has Clear Body or Infiltrator, with Cursed Body hidden. It learns Dragon Pulse on evolving, and can use Shadow Ball, Phantom Force, Dragon Dance and U-turn. Its base Speed of 102 is its best stat, making it a quick attacker.
Name origin
Drakloak may combine 'dragon' or 'drake' with 'cloak'. The Japanese name is Doronch (ドロンチ), which may blend 'dragon' with 'launch'.
Design inspiration
Drakloak seems to mix the amphibians Diplocaulus or Gerrothorax with fighter aircraft and crossbows, and its habit of carrying a Dreepy may reflect paternal care, which many amphibians show. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Drakloak evolves from Dreepy at level 50 and into Dragapult at level 60.
In the games
Players find Drakloak at the Lake of Outrage and in Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield, the games that introduced it. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Drakloak debuted in 'The Winding Path to Greatness!'. After its Dreepy fell off its head, it took Goh's Grookey as a stand-in, and it grew angry when Grookey began swinging its stick, until Dreepy was returned.
Fun facts
- Drakloak is the only Pokémon whose evolution starts at level 60, and since that is only 10 levels above Dreepy's 50, Bulbapedia calculates it as the smallest proportional jump for a second evolution, at 20%.
- The Dreepy line are the only Pokémon in both the Dragon and Amorphous Egg Groups.
- Bulbapedia lists Drakloak as the only Dragon type made of just a head and arms.
- Before patch 2.0.1 of Scarlet and Violet, Dreepy could learn Confuse Ray by TM, which Drakloak and Dragapult could not.
