Lore

Biology

Dusclops is a roundish grey ghost, 1.6 m tall and 30.6 kg, with stubby legs, one red eye and three tooth-like points, wrapped in bandages. The Pokédex says its body is hollow and that anything it absorbs never comes back out. Its real self is rumoured to be a bright red eye burning inside, though nobody has seen it.

Behaviour

Dusclops waves its hands and fixes its single eye on a foe to hypnotise it, and the foe then does its bidding, according to Sapphire's entry. A Legends: Arceus entry reports a rumour that peeking inside gets you pulled in through the bandage gaps, and its author admits to being too scared to check.

Habitat

Bulbapedia places it in forests and on mountainsides. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Kitakami's Wilds and Timeless Woods from The Teal Mask onwards, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

The Pokédex says it hunts will-o'-the-wisps as they drift past, drawing them into its hollow body.

Powers

Its Ability is Pressure, with Frisk hidden. Besides Shadow Ball, Hex, Will-O-Wisp and Future Sight, it learns Fire Punch, Ice Punch and Thunder Punch, and it can use Trick Room. With 130 base Defense and Special Defense against only 40 base HP and 25 Speed, it is a slow, very sturdy wall.

Name origin

Dusclops may combine 'dusk' and 'cyclops'. The Japanese name is Samayouru (サマヨール), which may blend samayou (to wander) and yoru (night).

Design inspiration

Its hollow, segmented body with a flame inside may recall a chōchin-obake, a haunted Japanese paper lantern, and the bandages suggest a mummy. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Dusclops evolves from Duskull at level 37 and becomes Dusknoir when traded holding a Reaper Cloth.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus Dusclops turns up in the Cobalt Coastlands, the Coronet Highlands and the Alabaster Icelands, and in Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles; it debuted in Ruby and Sapphire.

In the anime

Dusclops debuted in the film Jirachi: Wish Maker as Butler's partner, which he used in a magic act. On television, Timmy Grimm's Dusclops, which he has owned since it was a Duskull, first appeared in 'Disaster of Disguise'.
