Lore
Biology
Tropius is a big, sauropod-like Pokémon, 2.0 m tall and 100 kg, with a brown body, a long neck and broad green leaves on its back that it flaps to fly and uses to make sugar. The yellow, banana-like fruit hanging around its neck is said to ripen twice a year. Emerald's entry adds that it scatters pollen from its neck in spring.
Behaviour
Tropius shares its fruit: the Pokédex says it gives the bunch around its neck to children, who eat it as a snack. Ultra Moon says many ranches in warm areas raise Tropius, and Ultra Sun says the fruit of Alola's Tropius is especially sweet.
Habitat
FireRed and LeafGreen place it in tropical jungles. In Scarlet and Violet it lives around Casseroya Lake and in Paldea's West Province, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Diet
Tropius loves fruit. The Diamond and Pearl Pokédex claims that eating only its favourite kind, day after day, made fruit start sprouting around its neck.
Powers
Its Abilities are Chlorophyll and Solar Power, with Harvest hidden. It learns Air Slash, Leaf Storm, Synthesis and, at level 56, Solar Beam, and it can use Dragon Dance. Its 99 base HP and 87 Special Defense make it a bulky, if unhurried, Grass and Flying type.
Name origin
Tropius may combine 'tropical' and -saurus, the dinosaur suffix, and may also nod to tropism, how plants turn towards a stimulus. The Japanese name is Toropiusu (トロピウス), the same name as in English.
Design inspiration
Tropius resembles a generic sauropod mixed with a banana plant. Its tropical look may also draw on Mokele-mbembe, a cryptid reported from the Congo basin. These are fan readings.
In the games
Tropius grazes on Route 119 in Ruby and Sapphire, where it debuted, and Pokémon Colosseum features it as a Shadow Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles.
In the anime
Tropius debuted in the film Jirachi: Wish Maker among the residents of Forina. Its first television appearance was in 'From Brags to Riches', owned by Dominick, and in 'Odd Pokémon Out!' a wild Tropius on Camomile Island challenged Ash's Grovyle over Nurse Joy's Meganium.
