Lore

Biology

Feraligatr is a bulky, blue-scaled crocodilian that walks upright, with huge jaws, red eyes with black markings and three red spines on its body. It is 2.3 m tall and weighs 88.8 kg. The Pokédex says it has trouble supporting its weight out of water and sometimes drops onto all fours, but its thick hind legs still make it fast.

Behaviour

Feraligatr opens its enormous mouth to intimidate foes, then shakes its head savagely once it has clamped down. The Pokédex says it usually moves slowly but goes at blinding speed when it bites prey. It charges at enemies by kicking hard off the ground.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is the water's edge, and Bulbapedia says it can rarely be found there. In Scarlet and Violet you get one by evolving Croconaw in The Indigo Disk, and in Legends: Z-A by evolving Croconaw or in the 4★ Water-type wild zones of the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

Powers

Feraligatr uses Crunch, Ice Fang, Aqua Tail, Hydro Pump, Superpower and Thrash, and it learns Agility. Its Abilities are Torrent and the hidden Sheer Force. Mega Feraligatr, made with Feraligite, is Water and Dragon with the Ability Dragonize, which turns its Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves with 20% more power. Bulbapedia says it clasps its hands and lowers its Totodile 'mask' to form a false jaw with ten times the bite force of its real one, and its base Attack rises from 105 to 160.

Name origin

Feraligatr may combine feral or ferocious with alligator, and Bulbapedia suggests 'gator' lost a letter because Generation II names were limited to ten characters. The Japanese name is Ordile (オーダイル), perhaps from ō (king, emperor or large) plus crocodile.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Feraligatr appears to be a crocodilian that visually resembles an alligator. Mega Feraligatr's hood-like fin may nod to transforming toys, and to crocodiles that carry young in their jaws, though here the image is inverted. With its added Dragon typing it may also echo Regidrago's dragon-head transformation. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Evolves from Croconaw at level 30 and is the final form of Totodile.

In the games

Feraligatr is the fully evolved form of the Water partner that Professor Elm offers in Gold, Silver and Crystal. Mega Feraligatr, which uses Feraligite, arrived much later, in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

In 'Ring Masters', Raiden's Feraligatr beat a Golem and a Blastoise at Rikishii Town's sumo conference before Ash and his Snorlax stopped it. In 'Genesect and the Legend Awakened', a Feraligatr from Pokémon Hills is the first to take on the invading Genesect army.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says no other first partner Pokémon reaches its final form as early as Feraligatr, at level 30.
  • Bulbapedia says only Hero Form Palafin matches Mega Feraligatr's base Attack, the highest of any Water Pokémon.
  • Of the three fully evolved Johto partners, Bulbapedia says only Feraligatr appears in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure.
