Froakie

Froakie is a Water-type Pokémon, the Bubble Frog Pokémon, number 656 (#0656) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 7 kg.
Froakie wears a coat of bubbles that softens the blows it takes, and its happy-go-lucky look hides a watchful, lightning-quick fighter. It is the Water-type starter of Kalos and the first stage of the line that ends in Greninja.

Lore
Biology
Froakie is a light-blue, frog-like quadruped, 0.3 m tall and 7 kg, with white hands, a dark blue stripe from its oval head to its nose, and large eyes that stick up from its head. A foam of bubbles grows from its chest and back, with two small bubbles on its nose. Bulbapedia says these delicate, flexible bubbles are called Frubbles, and the Pokédex says they soften the blows it takes.
Behaviour
Froakie looks carefree, but the Scarlet Pokédex says its happy-go-lucky air is an act meant to fool enemies, and it drops the act without warning to overwhelm foes with blinding speed. Even when relaxed it watches its surroundings. Light yet strong, it jumps remarkably high, and the Violet entry says it throws springy bubbles at foes from above their heads.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat, though Bulbapedia says it has been seen in Blueberry Academy's Terarium. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or Pokémon HOME transfer, or lives in The Indigo Disk's Coastal Biome. In Legends: Z-A it is wild in Wild Zone 16, with more in the Mega Dimension DLC.
Powers
Froakie fights with Water Gun, Water Pulse, Quick Attack and Smokescreen, and later learns Bounce and Hydro Pump. Its Ability is Torrent, which powers up Water moves when it is low on health, and hidden Protean changes its type to match each move it uses. Base Speed 71 and Special Attack 62 make it a quick, light attacker.
Name origin
Froakie may blend 'frog', 'froth', 'croak' and 'rookie'. The Japanese name is Keromatsu (ケロマツ), possibly from kerokero, a frog's croak, and matsu or himatsu, meaning 'bubble' or 'spray'.
Design inspiration
Yusuke Ohmura created Froakie, and the line is based on a frog. Its white foam appears to echo the foam nests some frogs, such as the túngara frog, build to protect their eggs. Its dark hood and foam 'backpack' might also nod to ninja or to burglars with cloth sacks, which are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Froakie evolves into Frogadier at level 16, and Frogadier evolves into Greninja at level 36.
In the games
Froakie is one of the first partner choices in Aquacorde Town in X and Y, alongside Chespin and Fennekin. It can also be the hero or the partner in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
In the anime
Ash's Froakie debuted in 'Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!' and chose to follow Ash after helping him calm a Garchomp in 'Lumiose City Pursuit!'. Catching it made Froakie his first capture in Kalos.
