Geodude is the Rock Pokémon, a living boulder that sits beside mountain paths pretending to be a stone and flies into a rage when someone treads on it. One idle scholar counted a hundred of them on a single route.

Lore

Biology

Geodude is 0.4 m tall and weighs 20 kg, a rounded boulder with rocky brows, a wide mouth and two muscular arms for climbing mountain paths. The longer one lives, the more its edges wear away, until old Geodude are smooth, round and calm, though the Pokédex says its heart stays hard and rough.

Behaviour

Geodude is proud of its hard body and slams against other Geodude to see whose is harder. At rest it looks like a rock, so hikers keep treading on it and it swings its fists in anger. In deep sleep it buries itself halfway in the ground, then rolls downhill for food in the morning.

Habitat

It lives in fields and near mountain trails, often half buried as it watches climbers pass.

Powers

Its Abilities are Rock Head, which prevents recoil damage, and Sturdy, which leaves it on 1 HP instead of fainting from a full-health hit; Sand Veil is hidden. It uses Rollout, Rock Throw and Stealth Rock, with a base Defense of 100 and a Speed of 20. Alolan Geodude is a silvery Rock and Electric type with Magnet Pull or Sturdy, and it gathers iron sand as black brows and hair. Its hidden Galvanize turns Normal moves Electric, and only the Alolan trio have it.

Name origin

Geodude combines 'geo-' (earth) and 'dude', and may also nod to the geode. The Japanese name is Isitsubute (イシツブテ), from ishi ('stone') and tsubute ('pebble' or small throwing stone).

Design inspiration

Geodude may be modelled on an earth elemental, such as a golem. Hitoshi Ariga designed the Alolan forms; their black iron sand resembles magnetite, and the Electric type may pun on thundereggs. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Geodude evolves into Graveler at level 25, in both its Kantonian and Alolan forms.

In the games

In Red and Blue, Geodude turns up in Mt. Moon, Rock Tunnel and Victory Road. In Scarlet and Violet it can be traded in, The Teal Mask adds it to Kitakami, and the Alolan form lives in the Canyon Biome of Blueberry Academy's Terarium. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Brock's Geodude, the species' animated debut, appeared in 'Showdown in Pewter City'. In 'Winner by a Nosepass', Roxanne's Geodude beat Ash's Treecko, then lost to Pikachu's Thunder, which Bulbapedia notes should have been impossible.

Fun facts

  • In the original Japanese Red and Green, Geodude's Pokédex weight was 2.0 kg instead of 20.0 kg; Japanese Blue corrected it.
  • Per Bulbapedia, only Burmy, Wormadam, Mothim, Geodude, Graveler and Golem appear in every one of the five Hisui Pokédex sublistings.
  • Bulbapedia notes that Rhyperior sometimes mistakes a Geodude for a boulder and fires it out of its hands.

Pokédex entries

Makes its home in mountainous regions, using its arms to climb along harsh mountain roads. Can be troublesome—carelessly kicking one will cause it to fly into a rage and chase after you. (Legends: Arceus)

Commonly found near mountain trails and the like. If you step on one by accident, it gets angry. (Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

It uses both hands to climb precipitous cliffs. People who see it in action have been known to take up bouldering. (Ultra Moon)

Geodude that have lived a long life have had all their edges smoothed out until they're totally round. They also have a calm, quiet disposition. (Ultra Sun)

There are plenty of them to be found along any road. A scholar with too much free time once counted a hundred of them along a single route. (Moon)

Its round body makes it easy to pick up, but it is hard and heavy. It's dangerous to play with them as if they were snowballs. (Sun)
