Golem official artwork

Golem is a Rock/Ground-type Pokémon, the Megaton Pokémon, number 76 (#0076) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1.4 m tall and weighs 300 kg.

Golem is the Megaton Pokémon, a rock-plated tortoise that sheds its skin once a year and shrugs off dynamite. The old shell crumbles into soil that farmers collect to help their crops grow.

How to pronounce Golem

Golem is pronounced GOH-lum. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Golem is 1.4 m tall and weighs 300 kg, a bipedal, tortoise-like boulder with a round body in a shell of green rock plates and a flat-snouted head with red eyes. Each year it sheds its hide to grow larger, and the discarded shell hardens in the air and crumbles into soil. Very old Golem stop shedding, and moss grows over their shells.

Behaviour

Golem rolls down mountains in a tight ball, and the Pokédex says grooves are dug into mountainsides to steer it away from villages. After a big earthquake Golem tumble down in crowds. It hates rain and humidity, and it can blow itself up to leap from mountain to mountain.

Habitat

It lives in mountainous regions and is seldom seen in the wild; the Emerald Pokédex says volcanic craters on peaks.

Powers

Its Abilities are Rock Head and Sturdy, with Sand Veil hidden, and it hits with Earthquake, Stone Edge and Heavy Slam. Base Attack 120 and Defense 130 make it a heavy hitter, though its Speed is just 45. Alolan Golem is Rock and Electric, with an iron-sand beard and a cannon of black rocks on its back; it fires charged rocks using magnetism, or Geodude when it has no rocks. Its Abilities are Magnet Pull or Sturdy, with Galvanize hidden.

Name origin

Golem is simply the word for the earth-elemental creature of fantasy. The Japanese name is Golonya (ゴローニャ), possibly blending goron-goron (an onomatopoeia for tumbling stones) with the Italian montagna ('mountain').

Design inspiration

Golem seems to be based on the stone golem of fantasy role-playing games. Alolan Golem's back cannon may be inspired by electroshock weapons or railguns. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Golem evolves from Graveler by trade, or in Legends: Arceus with a Linking Cord, and Alolan Graveler also becomes Alolan Golem by trade.

In the games

Golem leads Team Rumblerock in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, and it first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan). In Scarlet and Violet it can be traded in, and Tera Raids feature it in The Teal Mask and, as the Alolan form, The Indigo Disk. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Chopper's Golem debuted in 'The Bridge Bike Gang' and beat Ash's Bulbasaur before Charmander's Flamethrower and Fire Spin set it alight. In 'Sparking Confusion!', an Alolan Golem rampages through Wela Volcano Park until Sophocles's Ride Metang beats it.

Fun facts

  • In Generation I (apart from Japanese Blue) a Golem can only be seen by trading a Graveler, which no other Pokémon needs; English versions hint at it through a Celadon Department Store NPC whose friend's Graveler evolved.
  • Its original Red and Green artwork gave Golem four claws instead of three.

Pokédex entries

The rocklike shell is shed each year. The cast-off shell then crumbles, reverting to a mass of soil, which can be spread across fields to promote crop growth. (Legends: Arceus)

Once it sheds its skin, its body turns tender and whitish. Its hide hardens when it's exposed to air. (Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)

It detonates its own body. The power from that explosion can propel it up steep mountain paths with amazing speed. (Ultra Moon)

When Golem grow old, they stop shedding their shells. Those that have lived a long, long time have shells green with moss. (Ultra Sun)

Once a year, this Pokémon molts, and its shed shell returns to the soil. This process creates enriched soil, so farmers collect the shells. (Moon)

Its body can survive dynamite blasts without a single scratch, but it hates rain and humidity. (Sun)
