Lore
Biology
Grimmsnarl is a green-skinned humanoid, 1.5 m tall and 61 kg, cloaked mostly in long, dark purple hair, with a small red mark on its chest. Most of the hair wraps around its body, with spikes on the shoulders and locks draped behind its legs like a cape. Bulbapedia says it is slimmer than it looks, because the hair gives the impression of a muscular body. It has tall crescent-shaped ears and a long upturned nose, and like its pre-evolutions it is male only.
Behaviour
The Scarlet Pokédex says Grimmsnarl has complete control over its hair, and the Shield entry adds that when the hair unfurls it latches on to opponents like tentacles. The Violet entry says it has not given up on petty misdeeds and pranks even after evolving.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it lives deep within the forest. In Scarlet and Violet you can evolve Morgrem, meet it in 5-star Tera Raid Battles or find it in Kitakami's Timeless Woods.
Powers
Its Abilities are Prankster and Frisk, with Pickpocket hidden. It hits with Spirit Break, which lowers the target's Special Attack, and Play Rough, and it can power up with Bulk Up. Gigantamax Grimmsnarl is 32 m tall and covered in hair; the Sword Pokédex says it can drill huge holes into Galar's ground with kicks powered by its leg hair, and the Shield entry says it can clear the world's tallest building in one jump. Bulbapedia says it is the only Pokémon known to use G-Max Snooze. With 120 base Attack and 95 HP it is a bulky, hard-hitting Dark and Fairy attacker.
Name origin
Grimmsnarl may combine 'grim', 'grimace', 'grimoire' or Grimm with 'snarl', and perhaps 'gnarly'. The Japanese name is Ohlonge (オーロンゲ), possibly from 'ogre' or oni plus ronge, slang for long hair.
Design inspiration
Grimmsnarl may be based on brawny, hairy ogres, trolls and oni, as well as bugbears and Grendel, the monster of Beowulf. Its strength coming from its hair may nod to Samson, and as the 'bad witch' counterpart to Hatterene it echoes the green-skinned witch of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. These are fan readings, and no designer is credited.
Evolution notes
Grimmsnarl evolves from Morgrem at level 42, completing the Impidimp line.
In the games
Marnie, one of the player's rivals, Gigantamaxes her Grimmsnarl in the Champion Cup semi-finals at Wyndon Stadium in Sword and Shield, the games that introduced it. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Marnie's Grimmsnarl debuted in 'Battling Turned Up to Eleven!', where it lost to Ash's Gengar in a World Coronation Series match. It appears again in the Twilight Wings web series, in 'The Gathering of Stars'.
