Lore

Biology

Groudon is a bipedal, dinosaur-like giant, 3.5 m tall and 950 kg, covered in thick red plates like armour. It has a grey underside, white spikes along its head, body and tail, and four flat blades at the tip of its tail, like bulldozer blades. Bulbapedia says it can walk on water by forming a path of magma beneath its feet.

Behaviour

The Pokédex calls Groudon the personification of the land, and legends tell of it fighting Kyogre again and again. It once came as a saviour to people suffering from terrible floods. After the feud it went to sleep in underground magma, and an Emerald entry says its awakening is said to make volcanoes erupt.

Habitat

The species data lists rough terrain, and the Pokédex says it slept in underground magma. It is in the Cave of Origin in Ruby and Omega Ruby and the Terra Cave in Emerald. In Scarlet and Violet it appears only in The Indigo Disk's Alfornada Cavern, after a Groudon Treat from Snacksworth, and in Legends: Z-A it arrives by trade in the base game, while the Mega Dimension DLC adds one in Hyperspace Desolate Land.

Powers

Groudon's Ability Drought brings harsh sun, and Bulbapedia says it was the only Pokémon that could have Drought before Generation V. Its signature move Precipice Blades is one no other Pokémon can learn, and it also uses Eruption, Fissure, Earthquake and Fire Punch. As Primal Groudon it grows to 5 m and 999.7 kg with the Ability Desolate Land, which stops Water moves entirely. Even normal Groudon hits hard, with base Attack of 150 and Defense of 140.

Name origin

Groudon may combine 'ground' with the Spanish don ('lord') or with -don, the ending of many prehistoric animal names. It may also involve the Japanese 土 do ('earth'), the booming sound don, and craton, an old, stable block of continental crust. The Japanese name is Groudon (グラードン).

Design inspiration

Groudon may be a personification of land and volcanoes. Its rivalry with Kyogre resembles that of Behemoth and Leviathan in Hebrew legend, but where Behemoth is usually shown like a warthog or hippo, Groudon looks like a theropod dinosaur with spikes like an ankylosaur's. The marks on its arms and legs resemble omega, the last Greek letter. These are fan readings.

In the games

Groudon is the mascot of Pokémon Ruby, where it first appeared and Team Magma tries to use it to expand the land, and Primal Groudon is on the box of Omega Ruby. Primal Groudon returns in the Alola games and in the Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC.

In the anime

In the film 'Jirachi: Wish Maker', a wish gone wrong creates Meta Groudon, a figure of pure evil that only looks like a Groudon, and Jirachi destroys it with Doom Desire. In 'Mega Evolution Special II' the Giant Rock stirs a Groudon awake, and in 'Mega Evolution Special III' a Primal Groudon battles Primal Kyogre over it.

Fun facts

  • Groudon shares its category with Torterra: both are Continent Pokémon.
  • Bulbapedia notes that a Groudon you catch in Scarlet and Violet always has the Fire Tera Type.
  • No Pokémon outside the Fire type can learn Eruption and Lava Plume except Groudon, and because normal Groudon is not Fire type, it gets no same-type bonus from either.
  • The DVD cover art for 'Jirachi: Wish Maker' shows a genuine Groudon, although the film's Groudon is something else.
