Lore
Biology
Hawlucha is a small bird-like fighter, 0.8 m tall and 21.5 kg. It has a spring-green mask marking, an orange blaze from its forehead to its neck, three tassel-like feathers at the back of its head and red, cape-like wings with a three-clawed hand near each tip. The Pokédex says it steers in the air with its wings.
Behaviour
The Pokédex says Hawlucha lives quietly without flocking, and fights constantly with its natural enemies, noisy groups of Primeape. It attacks from above and tires opponents with quick moves before a showy finisher, though showboating sometimes lets them counterattack. Bulbapedia, citing the Sleep Style Dex, says it sometimes strikes its pose in its sleep.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it practises its finishing moves in the forest it grew up in. In Scarlet and Violet it is found across Paldea, and in Legends: Z-A it appears across Lumiose City's districts and in Hyperspace Lumiose.
Powers
Hawlucha can have Limber or Unburden, with Mold Breaker hidden, and it leaps with Flying Press, High Jump Kick and Close Combat while sharpening up with Swords Dance. Its base Speed of 118 makes it very quick. Mega Hawlucha, holding Hawluchanite, grows to 1.0 m and 25 kg, gains the Ability No Guard and raises its Attack from 92 to 137. Bulbapedia, citing the official site, says it flexes to show off and baits foes into attacking, then retaliates with a flinching move before diving in with its signature move.
Name origin
Hawlucha may combine 'hawk' and lucha libre, the Latin American style of pro wrestling. The Japanese name is Luchabull (ルチャブル), from lucha libre and 'bull'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia credits no designer. Hawlucha appears to blend a bird of prey with a luchador and may draw on Aztec eagle warriors. Its green, white and red colours could echo the Mexican flag, and the gold of Mega Hawlucha may recall the golden eagle on that flag. These are fan readings.
In the games
In Legends: Z-A Hawlucha gains a Mega Evolution, and the Hawluchanite is a reward from a main mission. Champion Diantha used one on her team of six in X and Y, where it debuted, and in Super Mystery Dungeon it runs Hawlucha's Slam School, which helps Pokémon relearn moves free of charge and swaps Abilities for a Lucha Token.
In the anime
Ash's Hawlucha debuted in 'The Forest Champion!' as a forest's champion, and joined Ash's team after a battle even though it did not lose. In Horizons, Master Mayonnaise's Hawlucha, which can Mega Evolve, beat Roy's Lucario in 'A Surprise Reunion' before losing the rematch.
