Lore

Biology

Round and pink, Hoppip is a plant Pokémon with long green leaves on its head, big triangular ears, stubby limbs and a short tail. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 0.5 kg, and it can sense strong winds coming.

Behaviour

Hoppip huddles in clusters and braces its feet against the ground so the wind cannot carry it off, though the Pokédex says it enjoys gentle breezes. One entry says spring is near when they crowd together in fields and mountains. Bulbapedia says winds carry it all over the world except cold regions.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland, and Bulbapedia adds fields, mountains and even cities. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea's South Province and appears in 1 star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Hoppip can have Chlorophyll or Leaf Guard, with Infiltrator hidden. It learns Fairy Wind, Sleep Powder and Stun Spore early, then Leech Seed, Bounce and Cotton Spore. Its base stats total just 250, so it is a fragile support Pokémon that mainly exists to grow up.

Name origin

Hoppip may combine 'hop' or 'hippity-hop' with 'pip' (a small seed) or 'pipsqueak'. With Skiploom and Jumpluff it makes 'hop, skip and jump', and Bulbapedia says Nob Ogasawara partly coined the English names. The Japanese name is Hanecco (ハネッコ), possibly from 葉 ha (leaf), 跳ねる haneru (to hop) and 根っ子 nekko (root).

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Hoppip as a bulb or root with leaves like a dandelion's. This is a fan reading.

Evolution notes

Hoppip evolves into Skiploom at level 18, and Skiploom evolves into Jumpluff at level 27.

In the games

Hoppip has no major story role, and players first met it in Gold and Silver. It was missing from Sword and Shield but is back in Scarlet and Violet, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Mariah's seven Hoppip debuted in 'Foul Weather Friends', where she used them to forecast the weather. In 'Who's Flying Now?', James bought one that had been painted to look like a Chimecho.
