Lore
Biology
Hydreigon is 1.8 m tall and 160 kg, with a dark blue body, black fur on its necks and shoulders, fuchsia stripes and six thin black wings. The necks of its two side heads double as arms with elbow and shoulder joints, and Bulbapedia says all three heads can generate energy for attacks.
Behaviour
Hydreigon is violent and destructive, but the Scarlet entry says it is very intelligent, though it thinks only of destruction. Pokédex entries say its heads take turns biting until a target goes down, and there are stories of villages destroyed by it. The Violet entry says it is said to have grown ferocious because people long ago considered it evil and attacked it relentlessly. In the anime, Cameron's Hydreigon is fairly obedient to its Trainer.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says Hydreigon is rarely met in the wild, but has been sighted diving at passers-by from the sky. In Scarlet it comes from evolving Zweilous or from 5 and 6 star Tera Raid Battles; Violet players need to trade for it.
Powers
Hydreigon fights with Tri Attack, Dragon Pulse, Hyper Voice, Outrage and Hyper Beam, and can boost with Nasty Plot. Its only Ability is Levitate, which makes it immune to Ground moves. With 125 base Special Attack, 98 Speed and a base total of 600 it is a fast special attacker.
Name origin
Hydreigon may combine 'hydra', the German drei ('three') and 'dragon'. The Japanese name is Sazandora (サザンドラ), which may use 三 san ('three') and 残忍 zannin ('brutal'), and may also nod to the movie monster Ghidorah.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia, citing Ken Sugimori's interviews in Nintendo Dream, says the Deino line was remade around Yamata no Orochi, the eight-headed serpent of Japanese myth. Bulbapedia adds that Hydreigon has fewer heads so that it looks less off-putting, with its six wings as a nod to the missing ones. The brainless heads on its arms may also recall hand puppets, which is a fan reading.
Evolution notes
Hydreigon evolves from Zweilous at level 64 and is the last stage of the line.
In the games
Champion Iris battles you with a Hydreigon in Black 2 and White 2, and Lance can also field one at the Pokémon World Tournament. It first appeared in Black and White as the final evolution of Deino, and in Scarlet and Violet it appears in Tera Raids. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Carlita's Hydreigon debuted in the two Victini films, 'Victini and Reshiram' and 'Victini and Zekrom', where it also carries her through the air. In the series, Cameron's Hydreigon defeated Ash's Boldore and Oshawott, then fell to Pignite in 'Strong Strategy Steals the Show!' and 'Cameron's Secret Weapon!'.
