Lore
Biology
Deino is a small blue quadruped, 0.8 m tall and 17.3 kg. Black fur hides its whole face except the mouth, six purple spots circle its neck like bruises, and its short tail looks bitten off. A single small horn sits on its head, and the Pokédex says its body is covered in wounds.
Behaviour
Deino cannot see, so it tackles and bites whatever it meets to learn about it. The Pokédex says it memorises the scent of anything it likes the taste of, and that approaching one carelessly is dangerous. In the anime it rears up on its hind legs when it is happy.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says Deino lives in caves with plenty of water but little food. In Scarlet it is found in Alfornada Cavern, Dalizapa Passage, Glaseado Mountain and North Province Area Two, and in 3 star Tera Raid Battles; Violet players need to trade for it.
Diet
Anything that moves, according to the Pokédex.
Powers
Deino bites with Bite and Crunch, breathes Dragon Breath, and later learns Dragon Pulse, Dragon Rush and Outrage. Its only Ability is Hustle, which makes physical moves hit 1.5 times harder but less accurately. A base total of 300 and Speed of 38 make it a slow starter.
Name origin
Deino may combine 'dino' with the German ein or eins ('one'), or come from the Ancient Greek deinos ('terrible'); it also shares its name with one of the Graeae, three sisters in Greek myth who shared a single eye. The Japanese name is Monozu (モノズ), perhaps mono- ('one') and 頭 zu ('head').
Design inspiration
Deino resembles a young dragon or a sauropod. Because it is blind and found in caves, Bulbapedia suggests a cave salamander as another influence.
Evolution notes
Deino evolves into Zweilous at level 50.
In the games
Deino is found on Victory Road in Black and White. It returns in Sword's Lake of Outrage and, with the Expansion Pass, the Roaring-Sea Caves, and it is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Three Deino debuted in 'The Lonely Deino!', where Bobby was minding them for their Trainers. Iris tried to put her Dragon-type know-how to work to make the shy one, which refused to eat, feel safe around strangers.
