Zweilous is the Hostile Pokémon, a two-headed Dark and Dragon type whose heads cannot stand each other. They compete over every scrap of food, so it overeats constantly and ends up stronger just from the arguing.

Lore

Biology

Zweilous is a dark blue quadruped, 1.4 m tall and 50 kg, with two heads on black-furred necks and two thin, pointed wings. Its forelegs are muscular and each foot has two claws, while the hind legs are less defined. It appears to have no eyes, though Bulbapedia says it is not known whether it is blind.

Behaviour

The two heads dislike each other and each has its own likes and dislikes. The Pokédex says whichever head eats more gets to be the leader, so Zweilous always eats too much and is scarred even without opponents. Scarlet's entry says that unless both heads get equal attention they start fighting out of jealousy. Once it has eaten everything in its territory it moves on, the heads bickering over which way to go.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Zweilous generally makes its home in caves. In Scarlet it is found in Area Zero, Glaseado Mountain and North Province Area Two, and in 4 star Tera Raid Battles; Violet players need to trade for it.

Powers

Zweilous bites with Bite and Crunch, breathes Dragon Breath, and builds up to Dragon Pulse, Dragon Rush and Outrage. Its only Ability is Hustle. With HP 72, Attack 85 and Speed 58 it hits fairly hard but is slow.

Name origin

Zweilous may blend the German zwei ('two') with 'jealous', for its quarrelling heads, or 'zealous'. The Japanese name is Dihead (ジヘッド), perhaps di- or 二 ji ('two') and 'head'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia, citing Ken Sugimori's interviews in Nintendo Dream, says the Deino line was first meant to have tank features, was scrapped and was revived late in development, and the tread-like marks on Zweilous's underbelly are a leftover of that idea. Its two heads may also recall many-headed dragons and serpents such as the Lernaean Hydra.

Evolution notes

Zweilous evolves from Deino at level 50 and into Hydreigon at level 64.

In the games

In Black and White the only way to get a Zweilous is to evolve a Deino, while wild ones appear on Victory Road in Black 2, White 2, and X and Y. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Zweilous made its series debut in 'A Village Homecoming!', where Iris's friend Shannon raised two, and the older one evolved into Hydreigon. In 'Aiming for the Top Floor!', Ryuki's Zweilous easily beat Kiawe's Marowak.

Fun facts

  • Zweilous has exactly 20 more base stat points than Deino in every stat.
  • Bulbapedia notes that Zweilous shares its category, Hostile Pokémon, with the Red-Striped and Blue-Striped forms of Basculin.
  • Bulbapedia suggests its Shiny colouring may be inspired by the green scales of Zmei Gorynych, a many-headed dragon of Slavic myth.
