Lore

Biology

Incineroar is a muscular, upright tiger, 1.8 m tall and 83 kg, with red fur, black stripes and a grey chest marked like a wrestler's tank top. A belt of flame circles its waist, and flames burst from its navel as its fighting spirit rises. The Pokédex says they exceed 1,982 °C (3,600 °F).

Behaviour

Incineroar has a violent, egotistical streak and loves a no-holds-barred brawl. The Pokédex says it brushes off its Trainer's orders when it feels like it, finds beating unworthy opponents boring, and only gets fired up for stronger ones. It also feeds on the crowd: Bulbapedia says its spirit rises when spectators cheer and falters when they are bored. Underneath, it is happiest when children and young Pokémon admire it.

Habitat

No Pokédex entry names a natural habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is only available in The Indigo Disk, by evolving Torracat, or by trade or HOME.

Powers

Darkest Lariat, a Dark-type physical move, was its signature move in Generation VII. It also fights with Cross Chop, Flare Blitz and Flamethrower, and can use Bulk Up. Its Ability Blaze powers up Fire moves when it is low on HP, while hidden Intimidate lowers rivals' Attack on entry. Only Incineroar can use the Z-Move Malicious Moonsault. With base Attack 115 and HP 95 it is a tough, heavy hitter.

Name origin

Incineroar combines 'incinerate' and 'roar'. The Japanese name is Gaogaen (ガオガエン), possibly from gao, an imitation of a roar, and kaen ('flame').

Design inspiration

Incineroar is based on a tiger, with the look of a professional wrestler. Its Heel category and Dark type bring to mind a 'heel', the villain role in wrestling. Its hidden soft side could allude to kayfabe, the wrestling convention that everything around a match is real, which would make its bad behaviour an act. Its Shiny colouring may come from a white tiger. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Incineroar evolves from Torracat at level 34 and is the final form of Litten.

In the games

Incineroar, the final form of Alola's Fire starter since Sun and Moon, joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a fighter, with an enhanced Malicious Moonsault as its Final Smash. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Incineroar debuted in 'Pushing the Fiery Envelope!' as the partner of the Masked Royal, who uses it in Battle Royals, and became a rival to Ash's Litten. Ash's Torracat evolved into one in 'Fiery Surprises!' during an exhibition match at the Manalo Conference.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Incineroar is the only evolved first partner Pokémon with a base stat lower than its pre-evolutions: its Speed of 60 trails Torracat's 90 and Litten's 70.
  • Leaked official art showed that its development code name was 'Tiger 3', Bulbapedia's main evidence that it is based on a tiger.
  • Its 'Alolan Whip' move in Smash Ultimate is not modelled on any existing Pokémon move.
