Litten is a Fire-type Pokémon, the Fire Cat Pokémon, number 725 (#0725) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the Alola region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 4.3 kg.

Litten is the Fire Cat Pokémon, an aloof Alola starter that swallows its own loose fur and sets it alight to cough out fireballs. The Pokédex warns that if you try to pet it before it trusts you, you will get a nasty scratch.

Lore

Biology

Litten is a small black cat, 0.4 m tall and 4.3 kg, with red stripes on its legs and forehead, red tufts on its cheeks and another at the end of its tail. If it arches its back, red-tipped spikes of fur rise along its spine. It grooms itself constantly, and the fur it swallows gathers in its stomach as fuel. Its fur also makes flammable oil, so when it sheds it burns the old coat away, and the Pokédex says the coat regrows twice a year.

Behaviour

Litten keeps to itself and hides its feelings. Earning its trust takes time, and even then the Pokédex says too much affection is a bad idea.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat, but Bulbapedia says it has recently turned up in the Terarium at Blueberry Academy. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the Canyon Biome of The Indigo Disk.

Powers

The fireballs it spits change shape depending on how it coughs. Ember, Fire Fang, Flamethrower and Flare Blitz are all in its learnset. Its Ability Blaze strengthens Fire moves when it is low on HP, and its hidden Ability Intimidate lowers an opponent's Attack on entry. With base Speed 70 and Attack 65 it is a quick, scrappy starter.

Name origin

Litten may combine 'lit', 'little' and 'kitten', and could also play on liten, Swedish for 'small'. The Japanese name is Nyabby (ニャビー), possibly from nyā (meow), 'tabby' and hi ('fire').

Design inspiration

Litten may be based on mackerel tabby cats, whose stripes match the ones on its legs and forehead, and on black cats; the same stripes also suggest a tiger. Its forehead markings and eyes seem to form the alchemical symbol for sulfur, a highly flammable element. Its flammable fur oil may nod to the bakeneko of Japanese folklore, which were believed to drink lamp oil. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Litten evolves into Torracat at level 17, which evolves into Incineroar at level 34.

In the games

Litten is one of the three Alola starters: in Sun and Moon it is handed out by Hala in Iki Town, and in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Professor Kukui gives it to you on Route 1. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in The Indigo Disk, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

A wild Litten on Melemele Island debuted in 'Alola to New Adventure!', and Ash caught it in 'One Journey Ends, Another Begins...'.
