Machamp official artwork

Machamp is a Fighting-type Pokémon, the Superpower Pokémon, number 68 (#0068) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 130 kg.

Machamp is the four-armed Superpower Pokémon, said to be a master of every martial art there is and able to throw 1,000 punches in about two seconds. For all that strength, its clumsy fingers make it hopeless at delicate work.

How to pronounce Machamp

Machamp is pronounced muh-CHAMP. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Machamp stands 1.6 m tall and weighs 130 kg. It has bluish-grey skin, red eyes, big pale yellow lips and three brown ridges above its eyes. Two of its four muscular arms sit in the normal place and the other pair attach on top of its shoulders. A golden power-save belt, shaped like a wrestling championship belt, rings its waist.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Machamp's four arms react faster than it can think, which lets it attack and defend at once. It grabs foes with all four arms and throws them over the horizon, and its fighting spirit flares up against a tough opponent. It tends to leap into action before thinking, and any task needing care, such as fine work with its fingers, leaves its arms tangled.

Habitat

Machamp only appears through evolution by trade, so it seldom turns up in the wild, but Bulbapedia places it in the mountains.

Powers

Machamp has Guts and No Guard, with Steadfast hidden. Close Combat, Dynamic Punch, Cross Chop and Submission put its four arms to work, and its base Attack of 130 is its calling card. Gigantamax Machamp, over 25 m tall, fills its arms with Gigantamax energy so its punches land like bomb blasts, and it is the only known Pokémon that can use G-Max Chi Strike.

Name origin

Machamp may combine 'macho' (Spanish and Portuguese for 'male') with 'champ'. The Japanese name is Kairiky (カイリキー), possibly from kairiki ('superhuman strength'), which is also the Japanese word behind its category.

Design inspiration

Its build suggests a bodybuilder or wrestler. With extra arms and blue skin it might also draw on Hindu gods such as Shiva or Vishnu, and its crests and large lips could nod to the Kinnikuman series. Gigantamax Machamp resembles the giant heroes of the Ultra series, who can only stay huge for a short time. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Machoke evolves into Machamp by trade, or with a Linking Cord in newer games. Machamp is the end of the line.

In the games

Gym Leader Bea closes her Sword battle with a Gigantamax Machamp, and in Sun and Moon it works as the Machamp Shove ride Pokémon. A Generation I original, it cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it is an Alpha in Wild Zone 20 of Centrico Plaza, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

In 'The Battle of the Badge', Giovanni loans a Machamp to Jessie, James and Meowth, and it beats Ash's Squirtle. Bea's Machamp can Gigantamax in Journeys, shown in 'A Battle of Mega Versus Max!'.
