Lore
Biology
Makuhita is a yellow, stocky biped, 1 m tall and 86.4 kg, with a black marking that runs around its chest and neck and round black hands like boxing gloves. The knot on top of its head makes it resemble a punching bag. The Pokédex says it eats a lot, sleeps a lot and trains hard, and that this lifestyle packs its body with energy.
Behaviour
The Pokédex describes a Makuhita day as group training at dawn, food and naps after noon, then more training. It practises its slaps on tree trunks and once took a swing at an Exeggutor, which sent it flying. One entry mentions a rumoured old stew recipe for bringing up strong Makuhita.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists Makuhita as a mountain Pokémon and says it was originally brought to Alola from another region, though Alolan Makuhita are now more famous. In Scarlet and Violet it lives across Paldea's provinces and Asado Desert, and appears in Tera Raids. It cannot be obtained in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Makuhita's Abilities are Thick Fat, which halves Fire and Ice damage, and Guts, which boosts Attack when it has a status condition; Sheer Force is hidden. It slaps with Arm Thrust, Fake Out and Force Palm, and can use Bulk Up, Belly Drum and Close Combat. With 72 base HP and 60 base Attack but weak defences, it is a hopeful bruiser.
Name origin
Makuhita and the Japanese name Makunoshita (マクノシタ) may be corruptions of makushita, the third-highest sumo division.
Design inspiration
Makuhita looks modelled on a sumo wrestler, or rikishi. The knot on its head may refer to the chonmage topknot, and its hands look like boxing gloves. The black marking round its neck resembles a baby bib, which fits an unevolved wrestler. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Makuhita evolves into Hariyama at level 24.
In the games
Brawly, the Dewford Town Gym Leader, fields a Makuhita in Ruby and Sapphire, where it first appeared. In Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team a Makuhita looks after the dojo in Pokémon Square.
