Lore
Biology
Hariyama is a huge biped, 2.3 m tall and 253.8 kg, with a cream upper body, a dark blue lower body and dark blue hair that runs down its back in a long ponytail. A yellow skirt-like band circles its waist, and its hands and feet are orange. The Pokédex says its body looks fat but is solid muscle, as hard as rock when it tenses.
Behaviour
Hariyama challenges others to tests of strength without hesitation, enjoys pitting its power against bulky Pokémon, and stamps on the ground to build up power. It values etiquette and is described as kind. As it grows older, the Pokédex says it spends more time training Makuhita, and one entry notes that big, fat Hariyama are not necessarily the strongest.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists Hariyama as a mountain Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in places such as Alfornada Cavern, Dalizapa Passage and Glaseado Mountain, and appears in 5-star Tera Raids. It cannot be obtained in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Hariyama has Thick Fat and Guts, with Sheer Force hidden. It hits with Arm Thrust, Force Palm, Close Combat, Knock Off and Headlong Rush, and can power up with Bulk Up. Its base HP is 144 and base Attack is 120, which makes it a hard-hitting wall, but its Speed of 50 means it usually moves late.
Name origin
Hariyama may combine harite (an open-hand strike), hariau ('to compete'), haritaosu ('to knock down'), hariyama ('pincushion', for its plump body) and yama ('mountain'). The Japanese name is Hariteyama (ハリテヤマ).
Design inspiration
Hariyama is modelled on a sumo wrestler. Its long hair resembles a chonmage before it is tied up, and the square flaps round its middle look like the sagari strings hanging from a wrestler's belt. Its open-hand move Arm Thrust may refer to harite, and its stamping to shiko, a sumo exercise. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Hariyama is the final form of the line and evolves from Makuhita at level 24.
In the games
Hariyama is the Pokémon Brawly always leads with at the Pokémon World Tournament in Black 2 and White 2, and it first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire.
In the anime
Brawly's Makuhita evolved into Hariyama during his Gym battle with Ash in 'Brave the Wave'. In 'Drawn with the Wind!', a Hariyama gives tourists a ride through Malie Garden as public transport.
