Lore
Biology
Exploud is a lavender biped, 1.5 m tall and 84 kg, with red eyes and a huge mouth. Tubes with holes in them run over its body: seven form a crest on its head, with others on its elbows, knees, back and the tips of its two tails. The Pokédex says it breathes in violently through these ports just before a big bellow.
Behaviour
Exploud saves its raised voice for battle. The rest of the time the Pokédex says it tells others of its kind how it feels with whistle-like sounds from its tubes, varying the pitch and loudness. It is much more of a communicator than its fierce voice suggests.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists Exploud as a cave Pokémon. It cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet or in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
The Pokédex claims its roar shakes the ground like an earthquake. Exploud's trademark moves are Boomburst and Hyper Voice, backed by Crunch, the elemental fangs and Hyper Beam. Like its pre-evolutions it has Soundproof, with Scrappy hidden. With base HP of 104 and Attack and Special Attack of 91 it is a bulky mixed attacker.
Name origin
Exploud may be a blend of 'explode' and 'loud'. The Japanese name is Bakuong (バクオング), which may combine bakuon ('sound of an explosion') with ongaku ('music'), 'king' or 'gong'.
Design inspiration
Exploud looks like a pipe organ, an instrument known for its volume and many tubes, and may also nod to horns, loudspeakers or a megaphone. Its head crest resembles the frill on the skull of a horned dinosaur such as Styracosaurus, and its jaws recall a hippopotamus. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Exploud is the final form of the line: Loudred evolves into it at level 40.
In the games
Exploud first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire. In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky it appears deep in Concealed Ruins and World Abyss, on floors B16 to B29.
In the anime
Exploud debuted in 'Exploud and Clear!', evolving from Guy's Loudred, then disobeying and leaving him until he defended it from Team Rocket's kidnap attempt. In the short 'Pikachu's Island Adventure', an Exploud helps Team Rocket claim an island.
