Lore

Biology

Manectric is 1.5 m tall and 40.2 kg, a blue, wolf-like Pokémon with a spiky yellow mane that stands straight up in three points. It has red eyes, three claws on each paw and a blue spike-like tail bent at a sharp angle. The Pokédex says its mane collects electricity from the air and discharges it, creating a thundercloud over its head that it uses to drop lightning bolts.

Behaviour

Manectric keeps away from people: the Pokédex says it rarely appears before them. It also uses electricity on its own body, stimulating its muscles to move quickly and easing its soreness so it recovers fast. Its sparks sometimes start forest fires, according to the Pokédex.

Habitat

Grassland, in the Pokédex's habitat categories, and the Pokédex says it nests where a thunderbolt has struck. It is not in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it lives in Wild Zone 9 in Magenta District and in Lysandre Labs.

Powers

Manectric has Static or Lightning Rod, with Minus hidden. It strikes with Thunderbolt, Wild Charge and Discharge, snarls with Snarl and Crunch, and can burn foes with Flamethrower or Overheat. Mega Manectric, using Manectite, gains Intimidate, and Bulbapedia says its speed becomes equal to a lightning bolt, but it is so full of electricity that it cannot fully control it, which irritates it. Base Special Attack and Speed are both 105.

Name origin

Manectric may combine 'mane' and 'electric'. The Japanese name is Livolt (ライボルト), which may mix rai ('thunder'), 'lion', 'live' (electrically charged) and volt or bolt.

Design inspiration

Manectric shares traits with a canine and with the raijū of Japanese folklore, an elemental lightning creature, sometimes pictured as a blue wolf wreathed in bolts. Bulbapedia thinks Mega Manectric may borrow from the maned wolf, and notes that its snout resembles a crocodile clip. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Manectric evolves from Electrike at level 26 and is the final form of the line.

In the games

Wattson uses Manectric in Emerald, and it is his signature lead Pokémon in the Pokémon World Tournament of Black 2 and White 2, though it first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire. Mega Manectric appears in Legends: Z-A, and the Mega Dimension DLC places Manectric in Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Wattson's Manectric evolved from the Electrike that comforted him, and it beat Ash's Torkoal in 'Manectric Charge'. In 'Meeting at Terminus Cave!', Team Flare's Celosia sends a Manectric to chase Squishy, until Ash's Pikachu and Greninja stop it.

Fun facts

  • In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky a Manectric leads the Electrike Tribe as boss of Amp Plains, a job that Luxray and the Luxio Tribe held in Explorers of Time and Darkness.
  • In the anime, the Officer Jennys of Kalos mostly use Manectric, since the usual Jenny partners, Growlithe and Herdier, do not come from Kalos.
  • In the film Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, Cherie's Mega Wave controls a Mega-capable Manectric until Alva's Mega Wave Crystal is smashed.
