Lore
Biology
Mimikyu is tiny, 0.2 m tall and 0.7 kg, though the costume makes it look about 0.56 m. The costume is an old rag with a crude crayon Pikachu face and a wooden stick for a tail; only its eyes, a ragged fringe of body and sometimes a long black claw show through. When the disguise is torn, the head droops into the Busted Form. The Pokédex says a scientist who peeked under the rag died of a mysterious illness.
Behaviour
Mimikyu is quiet and lonely. It copies Pikachu to get close to people and Pokémon, hoping to look less scary; the Pokédex notes the costume only makes it creepier. Try to look under the rag and it becomes agitated and fights back. If the costume is damaged it stays up all night mending it in front of a mirror, crying inside, and never forgets whoever did it.
Habitat
The Pokédex says it lives in dark places untouched by sunlight. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea and Kitakami. In Alola, a Totem Mimikyu guards Acerola's trial in an abandoned Thrifty Megamart.
Powers
Its Ability Disguise is unique: the costume absorbs the first hit, then Mimikyu switches to its Busted Form. It strikes with Play Rough, Shadow Sneak and Shadow Claw and sharpens up with Swords Dance. Only Mimikyu can use the Z-Move Let's Snuggle Forever. With base Attack 90 and Special Defense 105 it is a sturdy, hard-hitting attacker.
Name origin
Mimikyu may come from 'mimic' and kyūkyū, a squeaking sound like Pikachu's, and could also play on meikyū ('mystery'). The Japanese name is Mimikkyu (ミミッキュ).
Design inspiration
Megumi Mizutani designed Mimikyu. The costume is based on Pikachu and on a bedsheet ghost with a face drawn on, and the in-game story that Pikachu merchandise became popular 20 years ago appears to nod to the franchise's 20th anniversary, when Sun and Moon came out. It may also recall the Bugul Noz, a gentle Breton spirit so ugly that it lives alone.
In the games
The Totem Mimikyu tests the player in Acerola's trial in Sun and Moon, where the species debuted, and the reward is a Ghostium Z. In Scarlet and Violet it can be caught wild and in Tera Raids, and in Legends: Z-A it appears only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Jessie's Mimikyu debuted in 'Loading the Dex!' and loathed Ash's Pikachu on sight. Acerola's Shiny Mimikyu, Mimikins, is the actual ghost of a dead Mimikyu and can float and pass through walls.
