Lore

Biology

In its Meteor Form Minior is a rocky ball, 0.3 m (1'00") tall and 40 kg (88.2 lb), and every colour of Minior looks identical until the shell cracks. Inside is a core in one of seven rainbow shades, red through violet, which the Violet Pokédex says depends on the dust it eats.

Behaviour

High in the sky, the Pokédex says, stronger Pokémon eat it, and it falls when its shell gets too heavy. It reacts when touched or called, though nobody knows if that means it is aware. The Scarlet Pokédex says fallen Minior try to return to space but can only fade away.

Habitat

The Sun Pokédex says it makes its home in the ozone layer. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in The Indigo Disk's Terarium biomes and in 5 star Tera Raids. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

The Violet Pokédex says it feeds on dust drifting in the atmosphere.

Powers

Shields Down keeps it in Meteor Form, immune to status conditions, while its HP is above half, then cracks the shell once HP is at or below half. In Core Form its Defense and Special Defense drop from 100 to 60, while Attack and Special Attack rise to 100 and Speed to 120. It learns Shell Smash and Cosmic Power.

Name origin

Minior may come from 'meteor', possibly mixed with 'mini', 'minor' or 'core'. The Japanese name is Meteno (メテノ), which Bulbapedia reads as 'meteor' plus 'nano'.

Design inspiration

Hitoshi Ariga designed Minior, from a concept by Masafumi Nukita, who also wrote its Pokédex entries. It is based on meteors, with seven core colours that follow the rainbow. Bulbapedia suggests the shell may recall a gashapon capsule, since the colour stays hidden until it opens. These are fan readings.

In the games

Players find Minior on Mount Hokulani in Sun and Moon, its debut, and it returned in Scarlet and Violet with The Indigo Disk DLC.

In the anime

Minior debuted in 'Showering the World with Love!', where Ash's Poipole made friends with an Orange Core Minior and had to say goodbye as it faded away.

Fun facts

  • Out of its shell, Minior is the lightest Rock type, at 0.3 kg (0.7 lb), and it ties with Rotom as the lightest Flying type.
  • In the Mineral Egg Group, Minior is the sole Flying type, according to Bulbapedia.
  • Excluding Mega Evolutions, it was the only Rock type introduced before Generation VIII that was unobtainable throughout that generation's games, says Bulbapedia.
