Lore

Biology

Miraidon is a large robot-like reptile with a violet metal body, silver face, neck, belly and tail, and white claws. A visor-like crest and a throat sac that inflates into a glowing wheel make it look like a sport bike, and its LED-style eyes blink by changing pattern. It is 3.5 m tall and weighs 240 kg. In Ultimate Mode its back legs fold into jet engines and it hovers; Drive, Aquatic and Glide Modes carry a rider, and when weakened it drops into Low-Power Mode and walks on all fours.

Behaviour

The Miraidon that joins the player is friendly, curious and loyal, and judges a person's character before deciding to go with them. The Pokédex says it resembles Cyclizar but is far more ruthless and powerful, and an old book calls it the Iron Serpent that scorched the land with lightning. In battle it floats above grounded foes, reads their movements and strikes weak spots.

Habitat

Area Zero, the vast crater at the heart of Paldea, in Pokémon Violet. In Scarlet it can only be obtained by trade.

Diet

It eats sandwiches made with Herba Mystica to recover its strength, and can smell those herbs on Titan Pokémon.

Powers

Its Ability Hadron Engine sets Electric Terrain when it enters battle and boosts its Special Attack while the terrain lasts. Electro Drift, a signature move only Miraidon learns, hits even harder when it is super effective, and it also fires Dragon Pulse and Parabolic Charge. With 135 base Special Attack and 135 base Speed it is a very fast special attacker.

Name origin

Miraidon may combine the Japanese mirai ('future') with 'ride' and 'dragon', 'don' (Spanish for 'lord') or '-don' (as in dinosaur names), and may be built to sound like 'me ride on'. The Violet Book calls it the Iron Serpent (Tetsu no Orochi). The Japanese name is Miraidon (ミライドン).

Design inspiration

Miraidon appears to be a robotic serpentine dragon mixed with fan-throated lizards and sport-bike parts: a windscreen crest, handlebar shoulders, wheel-shaped throat and tail, and exhaust-pipe legs. Its serpent shape and Electric type may recall Sugaar, a Basque storm god who takes the form of a serpent. These are fan readings.

In the games

Mascot of Pokémon Violet and a major character, riding with the player from the start of the game to the depths of Area Zero. A second, far more aggressive Miraidon also plays a part in the story.

In the anime

Miraidon first appeared in a short segment after a Pokémon Journeys episode, found by Team Rocket in Paldea. In Pokémon Horizons, Liko meets one and is swept into a Cyclizar race on its back before it flies off.

Fun facts

  • Toyota engineers have built a real, moving Miraidon as part of the Toyota Miraidon Project.

  • Its modes have English loanword names in Japanese, while Koraidon's builds use old Sino-Japanese words: future versus past, down to the vocabulary.
  • Its name is the same in every language, which is true of no other Paradox Pokémon except Koraidon.
