Lore

Biology

Mudbray is a small donkey-like Pokémon, 1.0 m tall and 110 kg, with a dark brown coat, a cream muzzle and underbelly, long pointed ears and black bangs. Thick cream-coloured mud surrounds each of its black hooves. Bulbapedia says it brings the mud up itself and that the mud does not dry out, even after long hours in the sun. The Pokédex says the mud improves its grip and lets it run over rough ground without slipping.

Behaviour

Mudbray is stubborn and independent, and its days revolve around eating dirt, turning it into mud and wallowing in the mire. It is a slow walker but strong for its size, and the Pokédex says a load of 50 times its own weight does not change its pace.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it was hunted nearly to extinction and was once thought to survive only in Alola, but it has since been seen in Galar and Paldea. In Scarlet and Violet it roams Paldea's provinces and, in The Teal Mask, Kitakami, and it appears in 2-star Tera Raid Battles.

Diet

It eats dirt, which it turns into mud.

Powers

Its Ability can be Own Tempo, which blocks confusion and Intimidate, or Stamina, which raises its Defense whenever it is hit, with Inner Focus hidden. It kicks with Double Kick, Stomp and Mega Kick, stamps with High Horsepower and Heavy Slam, and learns Earthquake and Superpower. Base Attack of 100 makes it a hard hitter for its stage.

Name origin

Mudbray may combine 'mud' and 'bray', the cry of a donkey. The Japanese name is Dorobanko (ドロバンコ), which may blend doro ('mud'), roba ('donkey'), banba ('draft horse') and ko ('young animal').

Design inspiration

Mudbray looks modelled on a donkey.

Evolution notes

Mudbray evolves into Mudsdale at level 30.

In the games

Mudbray is a ranch Pokémon in Alola, found at Paniola Ranch and on Routes 4, 6 and 12 in Sun and Moon. It is also found in Scarlet and Violet and in The Teal Mask, but it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Several Mudbray live on Paniola Ranch, first seen in 'Young Kiawe Had a Farm!', and later spat mud in the faces of Ash and his visiting friends in 'Heart of Fire! Heart of Stone!'. Hiroki's Mudbray also battled Ash and Rockruff in 'A Guardian Rematch!'.

Fun facts

  • Until Archaludon arrived in Generation IX, Mudbray and Mudsdale were the only Pokémon with Stamina as an Ability.
  • Wild Mudbray sometimes hold Light Clay, an item that lengthens Light Screen, Reflect and Aurora Veil, yet Mudbray cannot learn any of those moves.
  • Hiroki's Mudbray was the first Pokémon beaten in the Manalo Conference preliminary round in 'Battle Royal 151!'.
