Lore

Biology

Pidgeot has large wings, sharp talons, a short hooked beak and glossy brown plumage with cream underparts. Its crest, almost the length of its body, has yellow centre feathers and red outer ones, and a black marking sits behind each eye. It is 1.5 m tall and 39.5 kg.

Behaviour

Pidgeot spreads its wings wide to scare off enemies. Many Trainers pick it for the beauty of its head feathers, the Pokédex says, and Bulbapedia calls it a popular choice among skilled ones.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list says Forest, and Bulbapedia says dense forests with big trees. In Legends: Z-A it is found in several Lumiose City districts, including an Alpha Pidgeot.

Diet

Magikarp: the Pokédex says Pidgeot skims the water to pick them off, and spots splashing ones from around 1,000 m (3,300 feet) up.

Powers

Pidgeot's Abilities are Keen Eye and Tangled Feet, with Big Pecks hidden. It learns Hurricane at level 1, and also Air Slash and Wing Attack. Pidgeotite lets it Mega Evolve: Mega Pidgeot has a bigger body, longer wings, a crest that works as an air-current antenna, and the Ability No Guard. As a Mega its base Special Attack leaps from 70 to 135 and its Speed reaches 121, making it a fast special attacker.

Name origin

Pidgeot and Pigeot may combine 'pigeon' and 'jet', for its speedy flight. The Japanese name is Pigeot (ピジョット).

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia likens Pidgeot to a bird of prey, and says its Shiny colours resemble a golden eagle. Mega Pidgeot's crest looks like a punk hairstyle. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Pidgeot evolves from Pidgeotto at level 36 and is the last stage of Pidgey's line.

In the games

Blue's Pidgeot first joins his team in the rival battle at Silph Co., and Trace's holds a Pidgeotite in the Champion battle in Let's Go. Pidgeot first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), and Mega Pidgeot first appeared in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. In Legends: Z-A Pidgeot is in the base game (Lumiose Pokédex number 23) and can Mega Evolve, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.

In the anime

Ash's Pidgeotto evolved into Pidgeot in 'Pallet Party Panic' to fight a Fearow, then stayed behind to guard a flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto until it rejoined him in 'The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!'. Falkner's Pidgeot beat Pikachu with a single Whirlwind in 'Fighting Flyer with Fire' before Charizard won the Zephyr Badge.

Fun facts

  • When you rematch Gym Leaders in HeartGold and SoulSilver, both Falkner and Blue use a Pidgeot as their highest-level Pokémon, and they are the first Gym Leader and the last.
  • The English dub of 'Mewtwo Strikes Back' called Corey's Pidgeot a Pidgeotto by mistake, a slip fixed in the remake.
  • Its Generation I artwork gives it red and yellow tail feathers, but Generation III artwork shows only red, and the anime often draws them brown.
