Lore

Biology

Reuniclus is a pale green figure, 1 m tall and 20.1 kg, floating inside a blob of translucent green gel. It has black oval eyes and a red triangular mouth. Round lumps beside its body grow larger and darker the further they are from it, and form arm-like appendages that end in three-fingered gel hands. The Pokédex says it controls its arms, which are formed from a special liquid, with psychic power.

Behaviour

The Pokédex calls Reuniclus remarkably intelligent. When two Reuniclus clasp hands, their brains link into a network that boosts their psychic power.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the Polar Biome of the Indigo Disk expansion's Terarium and in 5 star and 6 star Tera Raid Battles.

Powers

Reuniclus has the Abilities Overcoat and Magic Guard, with Regenerator hidden. It learns Psychic at level 40 and Future Sight at 56, and gets the Fighting move Hammer Arm the moment it evolves. With 110 base HP and 125 base Special Attack but only 30 Speed, it is a slow, bulky special attacker.

Name origin

Reuniclus may combine 'reunite' with 'homunculus', 'nucleus' or 'cluster'. The Japanese name is Lanculus (ランクルス), which may join 卵 ran (egg cell) with 'nucleus' or 'homunculus'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia credits Keiko Moritsugu as the designer, citing a since-deleted tweet. It suggests the hand-linking may hint at neurons and synapses, the oversized head, arms and mouth at a sensorimotor homunculus (a map of the body drawn on the brain), and the arms at an amoeba's pseudopods. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Reuniclus evolves from Duosion at level 41 and is the last stage of the line.

In the games

Elite Four member Caitlin uses a Reuniclus in Black and White, and it is her partner in Pokémon Masters EX. Reuniclus debuted in Black and White and is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Damon's Reuniclus debuted in the film 'White: Victini and Zekrom', travelling with him and battling Ash's Pikachu. In the series, Geraldo's Reuniclus beat Cassie's Sawsbuck at the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup, then lost to Ash and his Boldore.

Fun facts

  • In a mispronounced-names segment of the 2023 Pokémon World Championships livestreams, it was given as 'ree-yoo-NEE-klus'.
  • Bulbapedia floats the idea that Reuniclus may be inspired by extraterrestrials, since it looks like a small grey humanoid suspended in jelly.
  • The Pokédex says it prefers punching, and its moves agree: in Scarlet and Violet it can learn Fire, Ice, Thunder, Drain and Focus Punch, none of which Duosion learns.
