Lore

Biology

Rowlet is 0.3 m tall and weighs 1.5 kg. It is a young-owl shape with beige plumage, a white underside and a white facial disc made of two overlapping circles, with large dark eyes and a short beak. Two leaves on its chest form a bowtie, and more leaves make up its tail and line its wings. The Pokédex compares its feathers to blades.

Behaviour

Rowlet is wary and nocturnal. The Pokédex says it stores energy through photosynthesis during the day, then glides without a sound at night, close enough to its target that the first warning is a volley of kicks. It relaxes in cramped, dark spots and has even been known to nest in its Trainer's pocket, bag or jacket.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no natural habitat, and Bulbapedia says it has lately been spotted dwelling in Blueberry Academy's Terarium. In The Indigo Disk it is found in the Terarium's Savanna Biome, and it can otherwise come from HOME or trades.

Powers

Its Abilities are Overgrow and the hidden Long Reach, which stops its moves making contact; according to Bulbapedia, no other known Pokémon can have Long Reach besides Rowlet and its evolutions. It learns Leafage, Peck, Razor Leaf and Leaf Blade, and later Brave Bird at level 36. With 68 base HP but only 42 Speed it is a sturdy, slow starter.

Name origin

Rowlet may combine 'root', 'round' or 'arrow' with 'owlet', a young owl. The Japanese name is Mokuroh (モクロー), which may blend 木 moku ('wood'), 梟 fukurō ('owl') and メンフクロウ menfukurō ('barn owl').

Design inspiration

Rowlet is based on an owl, most closely the barn owls, whose faces are heart-shaped and whose eyes are dark; the common barn owl has been introduced to Hawaii, the inspiration for Alola. Bulbapedia suggests the Grass type may nod to grass owls or Hawaii's pueo, and that the bowtie leaves foreshadow Decidueye's bow. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Rowlet evolves into Dartrix at level 17.

In the games

Rowlet is one of Alola's three first partner Pokémon in Sun and Moon and their Ultra versions, and one of Hisui's in Legends: Arceus, where Professor Laventon offers it. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Ash caught a Rowlet in 'First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-Style!', which Bulbapedia says marked the species' debut; it describes the Rowlet as naive, relaxed and rather inexperienced. In the Pokémon Horizon manga, Mana's Rowlet eventually fully evolves.
